Encyclopedia : K : KU : KUN : Kunisaki, Oita

Kunisaki (国東市; -shi) is a city located in Higashikunisaki District, Oita Prefecture, Japan.

Kunisaki City was founded on March 31, 2006, as a result of the merger between the towns of Kunisaki, Aki, Kunimi and Musashi from Higashikunisaki District.

As of 2006, the city has an estimated population of 43.206 and a density of 136 persons per km². The total area is 317,80 km².

Kunisaki High School has slowly gained a reputation for its excellence in English instruction, and has recently been host to a series of internation film screenings, recently featuring such works as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and The Shawshank Redemption. Kunsaki Technical and Agricultural High School lags slightly behind its crosstown cousin with respect to English accomplishment, a fact somewhat ameliorated by its production of delicious kiwis and strawberry jam.

Kunisaki is home to a branch of well known Kyushu restaurant chain Joyfull, as well as three convenience stores. Several notable local motorcycle enthusiasts can occaisionally be found in front of the Coco Store on the 213 Highway in the early evening. They respond well to friendly greetings. A short walk will bring you to Miraku-en, a yakiniku restaurant and favored establishment for Kunisaki Driving School company parties. The company president has deeply held convictions on Japan's culpability, or lack thereof, in World War II.

Kunisaki warmly welcomes foreign visitors.

Kunisaki is also the town where baseball was invented. The sport evolved from a traditional game that involved beating apples into sauce with whale bones. Bones were selected based on the whale's specific intelligence and ability to conceptualize and feel pain and misery. The sauce was pretty good.
