Kuon is a survival horror game for the PlayStation 2. It was developed by From Software and published by Agetec. The game was released in 2004 in Japan and the United States. Kuon is based on an ancient type of Japanese horror story called Kwaidan. The setting is a dark and gruesome mansion in the Japanese town of Kyoto where mutated creatures and other horrors lurk. The game is set during the Heian Period of ancient Japan.
When starting the game, players can choose between two characters to play. One is a teenage girl in search of her father, a renowned exorcist named Doman who was sent to the mansion with a few of his disciples to investigate strange occurrences. The other playable character is one of Doman's disciples. Each character represents their own chapter of the game. After finishing both chapters, players can play a third summarizing chapter as a master exorcist. These chapters, or phases, are known as the Utsuki-Ying, Sakuya-Yang and Kuon phases respectively.
In the third summarizing chapter, or the Kuon Chapter The player will learn the truth of events in the mansion and find the true villain of the game, who is reveal to be Doman, the exorcist. Who become evil in order to become more powerful than the current master exorcist, since Doman is jealous and hated the master exorcist. Doman planned everything, include the sacrifice of his daughters and disciples as well as several other innocent people through a forbidden ritual in order to achieve the "ultimate power" that he wishes. All the horror of the mansion were part of Doman's plans and work. in the Kuon Chapter, the players will play as the master exorcist and solve the final mysteries and challenge, as well as a final ending.
