In Sumerian mythology Kur was a monstrous demon personifying the home of the dead, Hell, the "river of the dead" (see also Styx), and the void space between the primeval sea (Abzu) and the earth (Ma). Kur, as a word, can also refer to a variety of other things. While it can mean the personification of an evil entity, it can also be seen as a place or mountain of some kind. The gods Ninurta and Ishtar have both had run-ins with Kur as a location.
