is a city located in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Kushiro Subprefecture.In 2003 the city had an estimated population of 187,556 and a total area of 221.61 km², giving a population density of 846.33 persons per km².
Kushiro was accorded city status on 1 August 1922.
History
- 1869 Kusuri becomes Kushiro.
- 1900 Kushiro becomes a First Class Municipality Kushiro Town
- 1920 Kushiro Town becomes Kushiro-ku. Kushiro Village(now Town) splits off
- 1922 Kushiro-ku becomes Kushiro City
