Kyle Sandilands (born 10 June, 1971 in Brisbane, Queensland) is an Australian radio host, best known for hosting with Jackie O. the weekday morning radio programs The Kyle and Jackie O Show and The Kyle and Jackie O Hour of Power. Both air on Sydney radio station 2Day FM.

He had a rough upbringing after leaving home at 15, as he has frequently discussed on radio. His first array into radio was a stint at a Townsville radio station after he lied on his resumé about working with Triple M. He served as the replacement for Ugly Phil on the Hot 30 Countdown in 1999 - Ugly Phil had recently divorced his wife Jackie O and left the country for the United Kingdom.

In 2001, Sandilands joined pop singer Joanne on a trip to Bali to shot her video for her hit single So Damn Fine. He was to appear in speedos in the video but rumour had it that he then changed his mind last minute and only appeared for 3 seconds in the video. In 2002 he was a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother.

In 2005, he replaced Ian "Dicko" Dickson as one of Network Ten's Australian Idol judges, for its third series.

He is the boyfriend of pop singer Tamara Jaber. He lives with her in a waterfront mansion in the harbourside Sydney suburb of Woolwich.

Popularity

In the February 2006 Australian radio survey, after only one year at the helm of 2Day FM breakfast slot hosted by himself and Jackie O was in first place on FM radio, and second place overall with 10 % of Sydney's radio audience.

Controversy

Sandilands' radio career has been dogged with controversies, many of them encouraged by Sandilands himself who delights in playing the enfant terrible of Australian radio, for the most part, unsuccessfully.

In 2004, an on-air argument with band Frenzal Rhomb erupted because Sandilands' co-host Jackie O had turned up several hours late for a concert and the band deliberately played over her on-stage appearance. It ended with Sandilands threatening to have their music banned from the playlist of his station, and its sister stations. ([transcript], [MP3]). 2day FM's sister station Triple M accused Sandilands of trying to determine their playlists, and said he had no power whatsoever to influence what they played. In the end Sandilands' threat seemed out of place, considering his station never played Frenzal Rhomb (Which was pointed out by the band's frontman Jay Whalley during their own air argument). The majority of the Australian media took Frenzal Rhomb's side over the incident, and agreed Sandilands and Jackie O had become big headed and were often speaking out of place on many issues. Later on Triple M played a Frenzal Rhomb track which was quickly followed by a call to Sandilands by Triple J radio host Adam Spencer.

Controversy: Australian Idol

Sandilands replaced the highly entertaining Dicko as judge of Australian Idol. Being on the big side of the scale, Sandilands saw nothing hypocritical in suggesting to contestant Kate DeAraugo to "cover up her tuck shop lady arms". While DeAraugo was not offended, it prompted a backlash from the Association of School Canteen Workers and legal action resulted.

Furthermore, he was accused of encouraging inhumane animal culling when he encouraged an Australian Idol contestant to simulate the hunting and killing of a feral pig, prompting accusations that her demonstration depicted an inhumane method of killing the pigs.

Controversy: Outing a Gay Member of Staff

Sandilands took it upon himself to "out" a gay member of staff. His motivations for doing this would be anyone's guess. It should be noted that gay news reader "Jeff" has not been "outed".

Controversy: Breaking No Smoking Laws in the Studio

Kyle has also been accused of glorifying smoking after revealing it to be one of his most favourable pastimes consistently on air. He has also faced conflict over revealing that he and Jackie smoke habitually in the studio, therefore vilifying NSW occupational health and safety laws that explicitly prohibit smoking in the internal areas of the workplace. His smoking habits angered many at 2Day FM. In one particular incident, Ron E Sparks entered the studio one morning to find it in a complete mess with cigarette butts everywhere in glasses of water and such. This angered him so much that he scribbled "No Fucking Smoking" on all the equipment in the studio with permanent marker. Sparks was promptly fired but was praised by many and now hosts on a different network.

Controversy: Putting his girlfriend's song on the playlist

In 2005 his relationship with former Scandal'us member Tamara Jaber was the subject of an accusation of conflict of interest because Sandilands' radio station, and program in particular, gave Jaber's single (released on a record label owned by Sandilands himself, King Kyle Records) noticeably wide airplay, while it was largely ignored by every other mainstream radio outlet in Australia, including Top 40 network Nova.

In 2006, the case went to court as Sandilands sued Channel 7 over the Today Tonight program that revealed he was plugging his girlfriend's music and therefore allegedly manipulated the Australian music charts. The four man jury found Sandilands was defamed by the program despite Sandilands' inherent conflict of interest. In April
