Kyoto Purple Sanga

Encyclopedia : K : KY : KYO : Kyoto Purple Sanga

is a soccer club with many enthusiastic fans. It was relegated from the J. League in 2004 despite having many national team players on its roster. Stars like Teruaki Kurobe and Daisuke Matsui have since left for greener pastures.
The word "Sanga" is a sanskrit term meaning "group" or "club", often used to denote Buddhist congregations. This reflects Kyoto's rich tradition of Buddhist temples (see sangha). "Purple" describes the colour of the team uniforms, which is also an imperial colour reflecting Kyoto's status as Japan's ancient imperial capital city. It has been decided that, from 2007, the team will simply been known as "Kyoto Sanga", dropping the "purple" from its name.
