L-410

Encyclopedia : L : L4 : L41 : L-410

Development of aircraft later called L 410 started in factory Let Kunovice in Kunovice, Czech Republic in the sixties upon requirements of main Soviet operator "Aeroflot", who was looking for turbine-powered replacement of Antonov An-2 aircraft. After first preliminary studies of aircraft marked L-400, there was intoduced new version called L 410 Turbolet. First prototype marked XL-410 flew on April 16, 1969. Because of delays in development of Czech engines Walter M 601, the prototype and first serial version was povered by P&W PT6-A27 engines.

After M601 development was ended, replacing original PT-6 by Walter M 601 engines and Avia V508 three-blade propellers there was introduced next variant - L 410M.

Upon further requirements of Aeroflot there was designed following version called L 410 UVP. This has improved performance in take-off and landing thanks to increased wing and tail area, but because of increased empty weight and shift of centre of gravity decreased seating capacity to 15 passengers.

Next development of UVP is L 410 UVP-E, most common variant of L 410. L 410 UVP-E has increased maximum take-off weight to 6400 kgs, next version of M 601 engines called M 601E with increased power, new five-blade propellers marked V 510; wing can be equipped by so called tip tanks increrasing fuel quantity on board. First flight of such variant was made in 1984, the serial production started in 1986.

There exist sub-versions of UVP-E: L-410 UVP-E9 and UVP-E20 which vary from each other only by minor changes arisen because of various certification regulation used. Last L 410 family member is L 420 using new engine variant M 601F.

The L 410 UVP-E aircraft is unpresurized, all metal high-wing commuter airplane, powered by two, reverse flow, Walter M 601 turboprop engines (2x560kW take-off power)and Avia V 510 five-blade propellers. It is equipped with retractable undercarriage. Aircraft uses two hydraulic circuits: main and emergency one. Main electrical system works with 28V DC. De-icing system consists from leading edge pneumatic-de-icers and electrical heating of propellers, cockpit wind shields and pilot-static system heads. Maximum take-off weight of L 410 UVP-E is 6400 kgs with possibility of increase to 6600 kgs for E9 and E20 variant, seating capacity 17 to 19. Cruise speed is 170 KIAS, maximum range about 770 nautical miles. Airplane is certified for IFR operation, CAT I ILS approach, and flights in icing conditions.

Main part of production was originally delivered to Russia, but after fall of communism many airplanes were re-sold to various countries. Roughly 500 aircraft are still in service, most located in Africa and Latin America. 40 aircraft are in use throughout Europe for commercial operation or skydiving. There are also an unknown number in Russia and Former Soviet Breakaway States.

Accidents
