L2J is an open source server emulator based on Java for MMORPG Lineage 2, which was developed by NC Soft. The emulator was first started by L2Chef but numerous other developers contributed to this project as well. This emulator has allowed anyone to run their own Lineage 2 server.
L2J does not require players to modify their clients in order to play, instead, players are required to edit their host file found in Windows’s system folder. Therefore, it does not violate NC Soft’s client modification policy, which stated any modification made to client is illegal.
Possible criticism
At the current stage, compared to retail servers, L2J have many game elements missing or not working correctly. This has lead to some degree of gameplay imbalance. Without good equipment, a L2J server could only support up to 500 players, which severely limits the server activity. The morality of running private servers are also debatable, even though as of now, NCsoft has not yet taken severe measures to hunt down private servers.See also
