Male same-sex activity was made legal in Scotland (albeit in the limited circumstances of two men over 21 acting in private) only in 1980. While female same-sex activity was never criminalised, lesbianism was severely stigmatised until relatively recently.
The arrival of the Scottish Parliament marked a transformation in the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Scottish public life. The Scotland Act 1998, the law which established the Scottish Parliament, defines ‘equal opportunities’ as:
“ … the prevention, elimination or regulation of discrimination […] on grounds of sex or marital status, on racial grounds, or on grounds of disability, age, sexual orientation, language or social origin, or of other personal attributes, including beliefs or opinions, such as religious beliefs or political opinions.”
LGBT life in Scotland is varied and there are a number of community organisations that exist to further the interests of the LGBT community.
