LMFNS is an acronym for LMiTek Music File Name Standard.
The Standard was created by LMiTek in 2005 as a proposal for the naming of digital music files.
With the increased popularity of P2P and other media file download programs it was felt by many internet users that a standard should be proposed for the naming of audio tracks. The naming system required had to be easily understood by humans and computer programs which would use the data within the names to catalogue and list tracks.
The current version of the LMFNS is V2.2. It proposes the file name structure:
Artist_Name-Album_Name-Track#-Track_Name.ext e.g. The_Beatles-Yellow_Submarine-6-All_You_Need_Is_Love.mp3
Version 2.2 still allows for just the artist and track names to be included in the form:
Artist_Name-Track_Name.ext e.g. The_Beatles-All_You_Need_Is_Love.mp3
There are various rules for naming more complicated titles. The current version is version 2.2 which can be viewed at [www.lmfns.be].
Previous Versions
Version 1.0 of the LMFNS simply proposed that all audio files should be named in the form:artist_name-track_name.ext e.g. the_beatles-all_you_need_is_love.mp3
Version 2.0 was repealed only weeks after its release. The V2.0 standard specified that underscores could be replaced by spaces; a system incompatible with many web browsers. Consequently V2.1 removed this aspect of the standard - reintroducting the requirement for underscores.
The standard has been updated several times to accommodate new requirements in audio file naming, and the current version is Version 2.2.
