LNER Class W1
Encyclopedia : L : LN : LNE : LNER Class W1
The LNER W1 No. 10000 (also known as the 'Hush-Hush' due to its secrecy) was an experimental high pressure steam locomotive designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in 1924. It steamed relatively poorly during test runs in 1930, and boiler performance was always low.
In 1936, No. 10000 was rebuilt with an A4 Pacific boiler. It was withdrawn and scrapped in 1959.
