LTU International
Encyclopedia : L : LT : LTU : LTU International
LTU International Airways (IATA: LT, ICAO: LTU, and Callsign: LTU) is a German charter airline company. The initials stand for the German phrase LuftTransport-Unternehmen ("air transport enterprise"). LTU was founded in 1955 in Frankfurt, and has been based in Düsseldorf since 1961.
LTU did run well frequented services from Duesseldorf to Beiing and Shanghai but they were dropped.
The airline offers flights worldwide and is owned by the REWE Group (40%) and dba (60%). Its hub is located at the Düsseldorf International Airport. Hans-Rudolf Wöhrl, the owner of dba, is currently planning to link the operations of LTU and dba, with dba flying inside Germany and LTU serving international destinations.
In the meantime, Mr Wöhl has decided to reduce his share in the company and is selling in excess of 20% of his holding to Juergen Marbach the long time CEO of LTU International.
The main problem is that LTU International has been running at a sizeable loss for several years now, funded by REWE in Cologne and there is no indication this will change in the near future.
New routes
It will inaugurate nonstop service Munich-Bangkok on Nov 2nd, 2006. It will operate 3 flights a week using an Airbus A330-200.
