Lady (Thomas the Tank Engine)
Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAD : Lady (Thomas the Tank Engine)
Lady is a character from Thomas and the Magic Railroad, voiced by Britt Allcroft.
Lady is a plum-coloured tank engine whose existence keeps the Island of Sodor alive. Without her, the Island of Sodor and the Magic Railroad that links it with the real world can't exist.
Many years ago, when Burnett Stone (a semi-retired railroad worker living outside Shining Time in Pennsylvania) was a young boy and Lady's caretaker, Lady was discovered by Diesel 10 who threatened to destroy her. He chased her over the Island and caused her to travel too fast. Lady eventually crashed.
Burnett took Lady into his workshop on Muffle Mountain to repair her, and confided Lady with no-one but his childhood friend (and later his wife), Tasha.
While Lady was being repaired, the Magic Railroad began to decay, with the magic almost dying away. After receiving a supply of Sodor coal from Thomas the Tank Engine, Lady was fired up and gave the Magic Railroad its energy back, restoring it to its former glory. The shrapnel given off by Lady as she travels along the railroad turns into Gold Dust when mixed with water.
There is little else known about Lady, except that Burnett Stone has her schematics, and that both he and Lady seem to have a very special bond. At the end of the film, either Lady returned to her resting place in Muffle Mountain or was allowed to stay on Sodor, but neither of these are stated.
She has not appeared in Thomas and Friends, but made an appearance in Calling All Engines in a dream had by Thomas the Tank Engine.
While she remains dormant, her whistles can be heard faintly on Muffle Mountain on a still night. Lady is possibly inspired by a similar engine called Gladstone, who featured in the 1937 film Oh, Mr. Porter! starring comedian Will Hay.
