"Lady Bouvier's Lover" is the 21st episode of The Simpsons
Synopsis
Maggie has her first birthday, and coming to celebrate are Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Grampa, Patty and Selma, and Mrs. Bouvier. At the party, Grampa is feeling lonely, and when he is bored, Marge suggests she set up a date for him with Mrs. Bouvier. They do well until when on a night on the town, Mrs. Bouvier goes dancing with Mr. Burns, whom she finds to be more dashing. Meanwhile, Bart hears about an Itchy & Scratchy animation cel which costs $350 when he is watching a TV shopping channel. He buys one with one of Homer's credit cards. Mr. Burns declares that he is in love with Mrs. Bouvier, against Marge's interests. Bart gets $350 from Mr. Burns to pay Homer back.
It is the day of the wedding, and Mr. Burns and Mrs. Bouvier attempt to marry. Only minutes before Mrs. Bouvier becomes Mrs. Montgomery Burns, in a scene similar to one from The Graduate, Grampa crashes the ceremony by arguing that Mrs. Bouvier not be married to Mr. Burns. She declares that she does not want to marry either man, and they hop on a bus and look anxious about their future.
Trivia
- The episode title is a play on the 1928 D.H. Lawrence novel Lady Chatterley's Lover.
- The swing song played during Jacqueline Bouvier and Mr. Burn's dance is 1936's Sing, Sing, Sing, written by Louis Prima, performed by Benny Goodman.

(pats Maggie)
Mind if I come in? I've brought chocolates.
Homer:
(grabbing them)
Yabba dabba doo!
- Burns: Bravissimo, Luigi. Bring us your finest bottle of vino.
Luigi: Hey, you trust-a Luigi, eh? He knows what for to make-a really nice the amore.
Jackie Bouvier: Monty, I've never been to a more romantic restaurant.
Luigi (Loudly, from the kitchen): Hey, Salvatore, break out-a the cheap hooch for Mr. No Tip and the dried-up-a zombie he's a-captured!
- Maggie is put to bed after all the excitement. Jackie begins to reminisce.
Jackie: I remember Lisa's third birthday. She and Bart did this adorable little song and dance routine.
Abe: Oh, heh heh! That was a real horn-honker! Let's see it.
(Bart and Lisa look at each other)
Abe: Now! Do it!
(Bart and Lisa groan)
Abe: (threatening) Do it...!
Bart+Lisa: (walk to window, turn around), (bored) Hot dogs, Armour hot dogs,
Abe: Sing it like you mean it! (plays harmonica)
Bart+Lisa: What kind of kids eat Armour hot dogs?
Bart: (fat voice) Fat kids!
Lisa: (squeaky voice) Skinny kids!
Bart: Kids who climb on rocks!
Lisa: (tough voice) Tough kids!
Bart: (sissy voice) Sissy kids!
Milhouse:(spots on his face) Even kids with chicken pox --
Everyone: -- love hot dogs, Armour hot dogs, The dogs...kids...love...to...bite!
(Homer walks by with a sign for Armour hot dogs)
Lisa: Doesn't this family know any songs that aren't commercials?
Everyone: (Lisa walks off) I feel like Chicken Tonight, like Chicken Tonight, like Chicken Tonight...
- Abe is making dancing feet with potatoes and forks. A lawyer and a pair of goons appear.
Lawyer: Sir, I represent the estate of Charles Chaplin. I have a court order demanding an immediate halt to this unauthorized imitation. Boys?
(The goons grab the potatoes and forks and stomp on them.)
- Abe is walking down the street slowly. The lawyer and goons appear.
Lawyer: Sir, I represent the estate of Jimmy Durante. I have a court order demanding an immediate halt to this unauthorized imitation. Boys?
(The goons grab Abe's hat and stomp on it.)
Abe: Well, would it be all right with you if I just laid down in the street and died?
Lawyer: (shuffles papers) Yes, that would be acceptable.
Goofs
- Grandpa Simpson is hassled by lawyers representing the estate of Charles Chaplin for his unauthorized imitation of the bread roll dancing scene in The Gold Rush (1925). The film had been in the public domain for nearly 40 years when the show was aired.
- Homer pushes a button in his car to roll up Marge's window. However, her door has a window-crank on it, suggesting manual (not power) windows. To be fair, some GM models came with interior door handles that resembled window cranks, although it has been established that this car was made in Croatia.
