Lake Placid is a town in Highlands County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,668 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 1,752 [link]. It calls itself the "Caladium Capital of the World."
Geography
Lake Placid is located at (27.296252, -81.364817)[Geographic references#1GR1].According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²). 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (9.51%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 1,668 people, 646 households, and 395 families residing in the town. The population density was 250.6/km² (650.2/mi²). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 116.6/km² (302.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 76.38% White, 9.95% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 10.43% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 30.46% of the population.There were 646 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 31.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.26.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $21,178, and the median income for a family was $28,194. Males had a median income of $21,629 versus $14,650 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,855. About 22.7% of families and 34.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 55.2% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.
