Lake Timiskaming

Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAK : Lake Timiskaming

Lake Timiskaming (sometimes spelled Temiskaming or Temiscaming, from the French Lac Témiscamingue) is a large freshwater lake in Canada.

Situated on the provincial border between Ontario and Quebec, the lake lies on the Ottawa River. It is 110 km in length, and covers an area of almost 295 square kilometres. While the water level is only 176 m above sea-level, the lake is in places up to 216m deep. Allegedly there are deeper spots, as the lake does lie on an old fault line.

The name is a corruption of the Algonquin name Temikami or Temikaming, meaning "deep waters".

The lake and surrounding area are popular for outdoor recreation.

There are several islands on the lake. Burnt Island (Ile Mann), Oster Island, Bryson Island (Ile du College), and Farr Island.

In June 1978, 12 children and 1 teacher from St John's School, Toronto died, when their canoes capsized on a school outing.
