Laminaria

Laminaria is a genus of kelp, containing over 20 species. The species Laminaria japonica is the main component of the Japanese food kombu. The following species have been recorded from the British Isles:-

Laminaria digitata (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux
Laminaria hyperborea (Gunnerus) Foslie
Laminaria ochroleuca (Bachelot de la Pylaie
Laminaria saccharina (Linnaeus) J.V.Lamouroux
Laminaria longricruris Bachelot de la Pylaie (The occurrence of this species within the British Isles has not yet been confirmed)

Laminaria is giant alga which is used in the production of Potassium chloride and iodine.
