- This article is about the drinking game. For the explosive device, see Land mine.
Rules
Equipment
1 smooth table, 1 quarter, 2-6 people, 1 cup or glass, beerGame Play
Land Mine begins with one player pouring beer (in any amount) into their cup or glass. The player then places the cup in front of themselves and spins a quarter on the table. They then must drink the beer, place the cup or glass back on the table, and pick up the quarter while it is still spinning. If they fail to accomplish any of these steps, in that order, they have to go again with a fresh pour of beer. If successful, play passes to the left and the second player repeats the process. As the game continues, players will find themselves in posession of empty bottles or cans. These are "land mines." During any player's turn, a player in posession of a land mine may place the land mine on top of the spinning quarter. If they succeed in stopping the quarter (or trapping it if the mine is a can), the player who spun must finish their cup and try again. If the land mine misses, play passes to the spinners left as if the player completed all four steps. Once slammed, a bottle or can stays on the table as an obstacle.
Regional Variations
Some players choose to create a "crease" on the table in front of each player. There is no defined size of this crease, but it is generally about 8" along the edge of the table and 4" deep, depending on the size of the table. If a land mine is slammed into a players crease, it is to be moved outside of the crease.Other variations involve the amount of beer per turn. One rule is to fix the amount of beer per play (a shot glass is frequently used). A more difficult variation is to, after a player's turn, have them pour the beer for the next player in the amount of his or her choosing.
Strategy
Since the goal of the game is to drink, and nobody actually wins or loses, strategy may be somewhat of a moot point. That being considered, the main strategy involves the quantity of beer that you pour into your glass before your turn. A smaller amount of beer means a shorter turn (less chance for the quarter to stop spinning) and keeps the player sober longer (better reflexes). The tradeoff is that the player takes longer to get a landmine which is necessary to force other players to drink more.
