Land of Wind

Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAN : Land of Wind

The Land of Wind (風の国, "Kaze no Kuni") is a geographical feature in the Naruto anime and manga series. It has a typically dry and windy climate, and is covered in large deserts as a result. Sandstorms are a common occurrence.

The Land of Wind is home to Sunagakure. It had been relatively uninvolved with politics until recent times, and even had a peace treaty signed with the Land of Fire. The lord ruling it, however, has been systematically cutting down its military force and transferring missions he would normally address to his own country's Hidden Village to Konohagakure. It conspired with the Land of Sound to launch a surprise attack and hopefully destroy the Land of Fire. The ninja of the Land of Wind tend to use wind and sand-based jutsu.

Sunagakure

right Sunagakure (砂隠れの里, literally "Village Hidden Among Sand") is one of the five great ninja villages, and as such has a Kage as its leader, known as the Kazekage. With its military forces being scaled down by the Land of Wind's lord, the Fourth Kazekage realized that they had to increase the quality of each ninja to maintain a military force (Gaara is just one result of that). As more time passed, the lord started commissioning Konoha with requests he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of that, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth Kazekage realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing, so he joined forces with Otogakure in an attempt to destroy Konoha and force the lord to re-establish Sunagakure's military force if he wished for his country to continue existing. With the failure of the attack and the death of the Fourth Kazekage, Sunagakure reallied with Konoha, and Gaara eventually became the Fifth Kazekage.

The techniques used by Sunagakure's shinobi could be said to have ancient Egyptian and Arabian undertones: sand (Gaara), wind (Temari and Baki), and wrapped mummies (Kankurō's puppets).

Land of Wind's daimyō

Daimyowind
The Land of Wind's daimyō (風の国の大名) is the Daimyo (warlord) of the Land of Wind. He is responsible for the budget cuts to Sunagakure that eventually lead to the invasion of Konohagakure.

Kazekages

Sunagakure has had five Kazekages (風影, "Wind Shadow") since its foundation.

Kazekage, First

First Kazekage
The First Kazekage (初代風影, "Shodai Kazekage") was the first Kazekage and probably the founder or one of the founders of Sunagakure. He wore a mask similar to Hatake Kakashi.

Kazekage, Second

Second Kazekage
Nothing is really known about the Second Kazekage (二代目風影, "Nidaime Kazekage).

Kazekage, Third

Third Kazekage
The Third Kazekage (三代目風影, "Sandaime Kazekage") was the strongest Kazekage in the history of Sunagakure. He was kidnapped by an unknown enemy, but because of the outbreak of war Sunagakure gave up the search for him. His body was never found. However, during their fight, Sasori reveals to Chiyo and Haruno Sakura his favorite puppet, the Third Kazekage, thus revealing he was the one who kidnapped, and killed, the Third.

The Third had a special genetic trait that allowed him to turn the chakra he molded into magnetic forces. This ability allowed him to create his 'Satetsu,' based on the jutsu used by the previous host of Shukaku. It is, as of yet, unknown if this was a Kekkei Genkai, or wholly unique to the Third, similar to the First Hokage's ability to perform .

Kazekage, Fourth

Kazekage (former)
Fourth Kazekage
The Fourth Kazekage (四代目風影, "Yondaime Kazekage") was the previous leader of Sunagakure. He is the father of Gaara, Temari and Kankurō, and husband of Karura. By his design the one-tailed Shukaku was sealed within Gaara so that he could become the ultimate weapon. As Gaara grew and his abilities began to manifest however, the Fourth started to view Gaara as a failed experiment who was a threat to the inhabitants of Sunagakure. In time, the Fourth began issuing orders for Gaara's assassination, none of which were ever successful.

As the military forces of Sunagakure being to be scaled down by the Daimyo (Warlord) of Land of Wind, the Fourth realized that the quality of each Ninja must be increased if a military force was to be maintained. As more time passed, the Daimyo started commissioning Konohagakure with requests he should have been making to Sunagakure. On top of this, he began cutting back on Sunagakure's budget. The Fourth realized that if he didn't act quickly, Sunagakure would be in danger of disappearing. So, joining with Otogakure, the Fourth planned to attack Konohagakure in order to teach the Daimyo a lesson and to re-establish the Sunagakure's military force.

Things, however, do not go as planned for him; just before the Chūnin exam's third stage, where his attack was planned to take place, he was betrayed and assassinated by his ally, Orochimaru, who steals his identity. Ironically, the son whose life he made miserable, Gaara, becomes the new Kazekage in his place.

Kazekage, Fifth

Elders

Chiyo

Chiyo
Chiyo (チヨ) is affectionately called Chiyo-baa-sama (チヨバア様) by the Sunagakure villagers. She and her brother Ebizō are highly revered in Suna and are known as the Go-Kyōdai (御姉弟, honorific form of "Siblings"). She is knowledgeable when it comes to handling certain poisons and used her skills often during the third Ninja war, only to be countered numerous times by Tsunade's medical expertise. This is why she holds a grudge towards "Ano Namekuji-musume" (あのナメクジ娘, "That slug-girl") as she calls Tsunade. She is the grandmother of Akasuna no Sasori. Her son was the enemy of Hatake Kakashi's father Hatake Sakumo, whom she still holds a grudge to. It is unknown if this son also happens to be the father of Sasori.

Chiyo is responsible for sealing the Shukaku inside of Gaara, under the orders of Gaara's father the Fourth Kazekage.

Chiyo uses ten puppets created by the first Kugutsu no Jutsu (Puppet Technique) user, Monzaemon.

After an extended battle that Chiyo and Sakura had against Sasori, of which all three people had been fatally injured, at the end Chiyo sacrifices her life force to save Sakura's life, using a jutsu she originally developed for Sasori, "to give life to a lifeless puppet." Because Sakura was not completely dead, Chiyo was still alive at that point, since she was not forced to give up her entire life-force to restore Sakura. Later on though, she uses the same jutsu to bring Gaara back to life, thus using up her remaining life force and ultimately, passed away.

Trivia

Ebizō

Ebizo
Ebizō (エビゾウ) is affectionately called Ebizō-jii-sama (エビゾウジイ様) by the Hidden Sand villagers. He and his older sister Chiyo are highly revered in Sunagakure and are known as the Go-Kyōdai (御姉弟, honorific form of "Siblings"). He is Sasori's grand-uncle.

Jōnin

Baki

Baki
Baki (バキ) is the sensei of Gaara, Kankurō, and Temari. During the Chūnin exam, he had confidence in the ability of all of his team members, although he comments on Kankurō not taking the battles seriously enough. He was also the one who subsequently murdered Gekkō Hayate. Having realized that Orochimaru duped not only him, but all of Sand, Baki has notably changed into a better person after the invasion, and it is quite possible that he regrets his actions.

Karura

Karura
Age: ? (deceased)2

Karura (加琉羅) is the wife of the former Kazekage, and the mother of Gaara, Kankurō, and Temari). Against her wishes, her husband had the spirit of Shukaku, the one-tailed bijū imbued into her unborn son. She died while giving birth to Gaara as a result of this. Before she died, she cursed Sunagakure, hoping her son would avenge her death and the horror she had been put through.

Trivia

Yashamaru

Yashamaru
Yashamaru (夜叉丸) was a medic-nin, the younger brother of Karura and thus the uncle of Gaara. At first, Gaara thought that Yashamaru was the only one that cared about him. Yashamaru told Gaara about things like physical pain, emotional pain and love; concepts Gaara was completely unaware of in his childhood. He was commanded by the Fourth Kazekage to assassinate Gaara in which he was given the choice in deciding whether he wanted to proceed or not. Yashamaru willingly accepted the command in order to avenge for his older sister's premature death. The assassination attempt, however, ended in a desperate suicide mission and ultimately failed. Before he died, he told Gaara that no one had ever really loved him, not even him. This left Gaara even more of an emotional wreck than he already was. His death was the cause of Gaara becoming somewhat psychotic.
