Lander is a city in Fremont County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 6,867 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Fremont County[Geographic references#6GR6]. Lander is located in central Wyoming, along the Popo Agie River. A tourism center that has several dude ranches nearby, it is located a few miles from the Wind River Indian Reservation.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 6,867 people, 2,794 households, and 1,824 families residing in the city. The population density was 599.9/km² (1,554.0/mi²). There were 3,036 housing units at an average density of 265.2/km² (687.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 90.81% White, 0.15% African American, 5.99% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.70% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.48% of the population.There were 2,794 households out of which 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,397, and the median income for a family was $41,958. Males had a median income of $30,602 versus $20,916 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,389. About 9.9% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.3% of those under age 18 and 9.3% of those age 65 or over.
