Landsmål

Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAN : Landsmål

Landsmål was the name of one of the two official standards for writing the Norwegian language between 1885 and 1929 (the other one being first Danish, later Riksmål).

In 1929, Landsmål was renamed Nynorsk, and Riksmål was renamed Bokmål. Since then, Bokmål and Nynorsk have been the official written forms of Norwegian.

In 1938, both written standards were reformed (modernized). Today, the terms Landsmål and Riksmål are used to refer to the pre-1938 versions of Nynorsk and Bokmål, respectively.
