Laponia

Laponia (Swedish: Lappland) was a historical Swedish province, or landskap, in the north of Sweden-Finland. In 1809 the eastern part was ceded by Russia, which in effect created a Swedish Lapland and Finnish Lapland. Today the Swedish province serves no administrative purpose, but the Finnish still does (part of modern Finnish Lapland however includes areas outside of the original Laponia area).

Other uses

Lapp is the old name of the native Sami people and Lapland is the commonly used name of their habitat, covering the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.
In Sweden, a part of the Lapp native habitat, the Laponian area, a large untouched wilderness, is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Before being split, Laponia was divided into juridical districts.

Districts: Arjeplog Lapland Court District, Arvidsjaur Lapland Court District, Enonteki Lapland Court District, Gällivare Lapland Court District, Jokkmokk Lapland Court District, Jukkasjärvi Lapland Court District, Lycksele Lapland Court District, Norsjö and Malå Court District and Åsele Lapland Court District.
