Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAS : Laserbeak

Laserbeak (occasionally spelled Lazorbeak; known as Condor in Japan, Vautour in France, Gufo in Italy, Laserowy Pocisk in Poland) is the name given to three fictional characters in the Transformers Universe. His toy, when in microcassette form, could fit inside Soundwave, a microcassette player.

Laserbeak was used countless times as a reconnaissance platform, uncovering key plans of the Autobots throughout the war. Originally transforming into something that resembled a flying disk, he was also used to pursue and take out individuals attempting to escape (eg. Hound and Cliffjumper, who were discovered after Cliffjumper tried to snipe Megatron. On that occasion, Laserbeak made use of a self-guided cannon to take care of Cliffjumper while he shot Hound and caused him to crash). He has also captured several humans during his stay on Earth.

Laserbeak, along with Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy, Buzzsaw, and Ratbat, works in tandem with Soundwave. Laserbeak is exceptionally loyal to Megatron. Laserbeak's name is derived from his back mounted lasers, which are powered by ruby crystals. While these powerful weapons are a great strength, they are a weakness because they are dependent on a supply of the rare crystals. Laserbeak is very cowardly and will only fight from afar, or in situations in which he has the advantage of overwhelming odds. Buzzsaw is identical in appearance to Laserbeak, but not related.

Laserbeak was able to talk in the Marvel Comics version, but not on the TV cartoon.

According to original tech spec notes written by Bob Budiansky found at Iacon One in 2006 the original name for Laserbeak was Slazer.

Dreamwave Comics

Laserbeak was among the Transformers who briefly fell under the control of the terrorist, Lazarus. Bumblebee, Frenzy, Grimlock, Laserbeak, Prowl, Ravage, Soundwave and Starscream were forced at attack the Smitco oil refinery in the Arctic to display their power for sale to the highest bidder (Transformer: Generation One #2).

Tech Spec

Laserbeak takes pleasure in hunting his prey -- usually the straggling survivors of a battle. Noticeably not brave. Will run for safety if threatened. Flies at speeds up to 250mph. Uses two independently targetable laser cannons with extreme precision to get information from capitves. Shortage of ruby crystals that powers the lasers can panic his systems into shutting down.

Garboil

In 2005, the on-line Japanese store E-Hobby released an exclusive recolor of Laserbeak named Garboil. Along with Howlback (a repaint of G1 Ravage), he forms one half of the "Cobalt Sentries", an arm of the Decepticon secret police. His name means " a state of commotion and noise and confusion," and his function is information control.

Tech Spec

A member of the Cobalt Sentries, the public safety arm of the Decepticon Secret Police, Garboil is familiar with the personal information of countless Decepticon soldiers, and observes in detail each one's ulterior motives, plots being executed, or treasonous conduct. His duty is to ascertain the results and select those evaluated as suitable for the evil elite. However, he tolerates absolutely no resistance in the nations and worlds under Decepticon government and suppresses the controlled citizens through fear, pain, and total management of information. When in battle, he can blare out from his vocal processors a directional, cacophonic blast that includes an override signal, using it to render enemy robots into a state of panic.

With Hasbro not having the license to the name 'Laserbeak' at the time, the red and purple repaint of the basic "flip-changer" Predacon, Terrorsaur was known as Lazorbeak. Unlike Terrorsaur, Lazorbeak did not feature in the TV series. Although his biography mentions that he has the same motto as the original Laserbeak, this was most likely done only as a homage and it is not believed Lazorbeak to be a reincarnation of him. The toy was later released in Japan with a slightly different color scheme but was called Hydra and was a completely different character; Lazorbeak himself not existing within official Japanese continuity.

Lazerbeak finally appeared in the IDW Beast Wars: The Gathering comic series as a Maximal Protoform who was turned into a Predacon by Magmatron's shell program.

Tech Spec: A fast flying sky pirate with a thirst for battle, Lazorbeak upholds his motto of believing the only good point he likes about the Maximals is their melting point. His laser weapon can melt through most of the Maximals' battle armor, but such aggression tends to drain his energon levels, allowing him to initialize only brief periods of aerial attack sequences between robot and pterodactyl modes. Still, when his power levels are charged, he's is one mean menace!

Oddly enough, in the second year of the toy line Terrorsaur was recast as a transmetal in the toy line (not in the television series), while Lazerbeak was not made into a Transmetal toy, but the transmetal Terrorsaur toy was closer in colors to Lazerbeak, being mostly purple.

In the Armada comic published by Dreamwave, Laserbeak is a sentient, if not minor, character.

Given to the children by Optimus Prime, Laserbeak records information in his spy bird mode and can launch fireblasts in his stun weapon mode. He is always alert to his surroundings, scanning for threats. What will Laserbeak discover during his spy missions that will help the Autobots defeat the evil plans of the Decepticons?
