Latin League
Encyclopedia : L : LA : LAT : Latin League
The
Latin League was an alliance of
Rome and the many other cities and villages in and around the area of
Latium. It was originally created after the foundation of the
Roman Republic to protect the Latin peoples against their common enemy, the
Etruscans (who had just been expelled from Rome and were leading a war to regain the city). Important in establishing the league was the
foedus Cassianum, a treaty struck between Rome and the Latin cities in 493 BC. The treaty came in the aftermath of a Roman victory over the Latins at Lake Regillus in 496 BC. The Latin cities were eager for the agreement as it granted them security against other groups in Central Italy. After the Roman defeated the Etruscans, the League served as protection against the invading
Celts from
Gaul.
The alliance fell apart in 340 BC when many of the other cities began to feel threatened by the Romans considerably growing influence.
