Leawood is a city in Johnson County, Kansas and is a suburb of Kansas City, Kansas. The population was 27,656 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²). 39.1 km² (15.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.07% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 27,656 people, 9,841 households, and 8,118 families residing in the city. The population density was 708.1/km² (1,833.4/mi²). There were 10,129 housing units at an average density of 259.3/km² (671.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.19% White, 1.46% African American, 0.14% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30% of the population.

There were 9,841 households out of which 41.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.0% were married couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.2% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 29.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $102,496, and the median income for a family was $113,058. Males had a median income of $90,546 versus $43,933 for females. The per capita income for the city was $49,139. About 0.5% of families and 1.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.5% of those under age 18 and 2.8% of those age 65 or over.
