Lejre

Lejre' is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Roskilde County on the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in east Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 88 km², and has a total population of 8,724 (2005). Its mayor is Jens Hald Madsen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.
The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Lejre.
Neighboring municipalities are Ramsø and Roskilde to the east, Bramsnæs to the north, Hvalsø to the west, and Hvalsø to the south. Most of its northern border is defined by the waters of Roskilde Fjord.
By January 1, 2007 Lejre municipality will cease to exist due to Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Bramsnæs and Hvalsø municipalities to form the new Lejre municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 240 km² and a total population of ca. 25,971 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Sjælland ("Zealand Region").
Attractions
The municipality is home to the Lejre Experimental Centre, a center for experimental archaeology and education, which includes reconstructions and recreations from different periods of Denmark’s history— from pre-history to the time of the Vikings. The centerpiece of the facility is an Iron Age village reconstruction, complete with sacrificial bog. The center is open to the public.
