Leland Stanford, Jr.

Leland Stanford Jr. (May 14, 1868-March 13, 1884), Leland DeWitt Stanford until age nine, was the only child of Governor Leland Stanford of California and his wife Jane Stanford and is the namesake of Stanford University in the United States. Leland, Jr. died of typhoid two months before his sixteenth birthday, while on the Grand Tour of Europe, and his parents devoted their fortune to a memorial, Leland Stanford Junior University, in his honor. He is buried with his parents at the Stanford family mausoleum on the Stanford campus.
