Leningrad Cowboys Go America

Encyclopedia : L : LE : LEN : Leningrad Cowboys Go America

Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a 1989 road movie by Aki Kaurismäki about the adventures of a Russian rock band (the Leningrad Cowboys, played by the Finnish rock band Leningrad Cowboys) that goes to the United States to become famous.

The film made the real Leningrad Cowboys famous, and was followed five years later by a sequel, Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses.

Plot

At the beginning, the Leningrad Cowboys are still in Russia, where nobody likes their blend of polka and rock and roll music. Due to their seemingly complete lack of talent, a move to America comes as a natural choice. Once in America, they play different styles of music in all sorts of places (one of them closes after the band has played there), while being driven on and exploited by their manager Vladimir (Matti Pellonpää) and pursued by the village idiot, who tries to become a band member. In the end, the manager leaves, but the band makes it to Mexico, where they finally find success and happiness.
