Location of the Leningrad Oblast in the Russian Federation
Leningrad Oblast (Russian: , tr.: Leningradskaya oblast) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast) located in the Northwestern Federal District and named after the revolutionary Vladimir Lenin. The oblast was historically known as Ingria (until 1927), but that region also contained the Karelian Isthmus which was ceded by Finland in 1940.
The oblast has an area of 84,500 km² and population 1,669,205 (as of 2002 All-Russia Population Census). The fraction of urban population is 66.4%. There are 31 towns, the most populous of them is Gatchina, with 88,659 inhabitants.
