Lenox Square, owned by the Simon Property Group, is a shopping mall located in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. It was built and opened in August 1959 as an open-air mall anchored by Rich's, Davison's (later known as Macy's) and a Colonial grocery store. There were 60 original tenants including a bowling alley and a movie theater. Lenox Square was the first major shopping mall in Georgia. In 1960, Lenox Square began an annual tradition of hosting one of the largest Independence day fireworks displays in Georgia.
In the early 1970s, Lenox Square was enclosed to compete with the newer enclosed malls that were springing up in the region. This expansion also included a new wing with Georgia's first and only Neiman Marcus. Further expansion was completed in 1980, creating a three level addition on the back side of the mall and a food court. This addition also included a station for the MARTA line, which was under construction during that time.
In 1991, the Rich's there became the flagship of the Rich's chain when the downtown store closed. Later in 1995, the largest expansion of the mall occurred when a second story was added to the original one-level mall portion. This expansion made Lenox Square, at the time, the largest shopping center in the Southeast, with 1.5 million square footage encompassing 240 stores and restaurants. Again with Rich's, in 2005 when the Rich's chain was eliminated in favor of a national Macy's, the store became the flagship of the Macy's South division.
Today, Lenox Square is considered to be the premier shopping destination in the Southeast. Currently anchored by Bloomingdale's (in what was originally Davison's and later Macy's), Macy's (in the former Rich's) and Neiman Marcus (Georgia's first and only location), some of the exclusive tenants in this massive mall include Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, Burberry, Cartier, Coach and Hermès. Lenox Square is also the sister mall to the posh Phipps Plaza which is diagonally across the street.
