Leoben Conoy

Encyclopedia : L : LE : LEO : Leoben Conoy

Leoben Conoy is a character in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series.

Conoy is a humanoid Cylon agent with a bizarre demeanour. He portrays himself as having philosophical and religious enlightenment. Meanwhile he delights in playing mind games by engaging in distorted conversations that entwine both harrowing truth and wicked lies.

He was first encountered in the miniseries by Commander Adama hiding in the Ragnar Anchorage supply depot posing as an arms dealer scrounging for weapon supplies. To avoid arrest, Conoy offered to "help" Adama's supply team gather cannon shells for Galactica's railguns. After an explosive device was accidentally detonated, Adama became trapped with Conoy and separated from the rest of the crew. While Adama looked for a way out, Conoy conversed with him. During the conversation Adama noticed Conoy’s "allergies" were getting worse. This made Adama suspicious as it is a reaction that Cylons have (due to the radiation field emitted by the gas giant planet the anchorage orbits). Eventually, Conoy confirmed Adama’s suspicions that he is a Cylon.

In the ensuing struggle, Conoy reacted with amazing speed and strength, but Adama managed to kill him by bludgeoning him in the head with a flashlight. After Adama was rescued, Conoy's body was taken back to Galactica and examined. This revealed that Cylon bio-synthetic variants are almost identical to humans.

Just prior to his demise, Conoy revealed to Adama that Cylons can be "resurrected" with their personas downloaded into another copy upon death. This allows all of their experiences to be saved. In a sense, they never die. Unfortunately for this Conoy variant, it is likely the radiation field prevented him for sending his signal back to the Cylon homeworld for proper resurrection.

In the episode "Flesh and Bone", a copy of Conoy was found in the fleet hiding aboard the Gemenon Traveller and was arrested. After dodging questions and playing mind games he revealed he had planted a nuclear bomb within the fleet. Conoy was subsequently brutally interrogated by Starbuck. President Laura Roslin intervened the interrogation and questioned Conoy more courteously. He then made startling predictions about Kobol and the future of the fleet. After admitting there was no bomb and frightening Roslin by stating Commander Adama was a Cylon spy, Roslin had Conoy vented into space.

In the final episode of 2nd season "Lay Down Your Burdens, Part II", Conoy appeared once again during the Cylon invasion of New Caprica. He asked Starbuck's husband Samuel Anders for Starbuck's whereabouts, but we don't yet know why.
