León (Llión in Asturian-leonese language) is a province of northwestern Spain, in the northwestern part of the autonomous community of Castile and León. The historic leonese country is integrated by the provinces of León/Llión, Zamora and Salamanca . It is bordered by the provinces of Zamora, Ourense, Lugo, Asturias, Cantabria, Palencia, and Valladolid.
About one quarter of its population of 496,655 (2002) live in the capital, León.

The province shares the Parque Nacional Picos de Europa (in the Picos de Europa mountain range) with Cantabria and Asturias.
