Liane Cartman

Liane Cartman, originally voiced by the late Mary Kay Bergman and later by Eliza J. Schneider and April Stewart, is the mother of Eric Cartman on the television program South Park. She is a sexually promiscuous hermaphrodite (she is actually Eric's biological father, but the show consistently refers to her as his mother) who has been featured on the cover of Crack Whore magazine. She is a pushover, and constantly spoils her child with toys and fattening foods, probably leading to his severe behavioral problems and overweight physique. She is named after Liane Adamo, the ex-fiancé of South Park co-creator Trey Parker. Adamo cheated on Parker and left him, and the character of Liane Cartman is one of the characters (another was the horse Liane from Parker's Cannibal! The Musical) Parker created as a tribute to her.

In "Cartman Gets An Anal Probe," she offers her overweight son Cartman powdered donut pancake surprise, cheesy poofs and chocolate chicken pot pie. When he complains that other kids call him fat, she tells him he's big boned. She also makes a controversial reference to masturbation when Cartman calls his kitten a dildo and she replies, "Well, then. I know a certain kitty kitty who's sleeping with Mommy tonight."

In "Weight Gain 4000," she gets Cartman some Weight Gain 4000 even though grocery day wasn't until the following day, an example of her spoiling Cartman. In Volcano, she packs Cartman cheesy poofs and happy tarts and embarrasses him in front of his friends.

In "Death," she tries to tell Cartman not to watch Terrance and Phillip because of the language, but then allows him to watch it even though Cartman uses profanity while watching it. She joins Sheila Broflovski and other parents in protesting Terrance and Phillip but still finds toilet humor funny. In Damien, she throws Cartman an extravagant party for his 9th birthday and seems to be attracted to Chef. In Starvin Marvin, she doesn't seem to notice when Cartman is taken to Africa in place of Marvin. In Cartman's Mom Is a Dirty Slut, she explains sex to Cartman (sometimes the man puts his who-who-dilly in the woman's cha-cha). In the episode it is revealed that she has slept with almost every adult in South Park, including Chief Running Water, Chef, Mr. Garrison, Principal Victoria, the mayor, Jesus, Priest Maxi, Mephesto, his assistant Kevin, Jimbo, Ned, Gerald Broflovski, and the 1989/1991 Denver Broncos.

The episode "Tsst" most clearly shows Liane's mentality and the relationship she has with her son. Liane attempts to discipline Eric, by hiring nannies and The Dog Whisperer from reality television. The Dog Whisperer is successful in making Eric a respectful and self-improving individual capable of empathy. Eric even begins to lose weight and study on his own. Liane, though, due to her loneliness and dependence on her son, immediately undoes this progress by again spoiling her son.
