Libbis

Encyclopedia : L : LI : LIB : Libbis

Libbis is a surname originating from the Alsace-Lorraine region in France. Although the name (and region) is of Germanic origin, most people with this surname consider themselves French, not German.

All the Libbis's outside Germany and France are believed to be descended from Arnim Fookes Libbis who emigrated to England in 1803. His descendants now reside in Liverpool, Poole, and Cornwall in England, and in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Vermont in the United States. There are also many in South Eastern Australia, primarily in Victoria, but it is unknown if they are descended from Arnim. Libbis is most likely an old Alsatian German word for 'dear' or 'dearest'. Liebste in normal German.
