Liman (landform)
Encyclopedia : L : LI : LIM : Liman (landform)
Liman (Russian: ) is a name for a long, narrow bay or lagoon constituting the estuary of a river, formed from a drowned river valley. The name is used almost exclusively for such features found along the northern coast of the Black Sea, as well as the coast of the Sea of Azov, in Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Russia.
The word came from the Medieval Greek λιμένας meaning bay or port, probably via Turkic languages [link]. In modern Turkish, liman means harbour and port.
Examples of limans include Lake Varna in Bulgaria and the Dniester Liman in Ukraine.
