Limburg an der Lahn (Limburg on the Lahn river) is a German town, the capital of the district Limburg-Weilburg in the west of Hesse.

The city is located at the Lahn river, between the mountains of the Westerwald and the Taunus.

Limburg has eight districts: Ahlbach, Dietkirchen, Eschhofen, Linter, Lindenholzhausen, Offheim and Staffel.

History

The city was first mentioned in 910.

Offheim, first mentioned in historical documents in 1217, was an independent village, but in the 1970s it was incorporated into Limburg. There is a church tower in Offheim that dates to 1150. The current population of the district is 2648, 1327 male and 1321 female.

Main sights

Altstadt (old town) area of Limburg boasts a fine ancient cathedral and is full of narrow streets with half-timbered houses, dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Culture

Limburg has a famous boys' choir: The "Limburger Domsingknaben".

Limburg is connected to the InterCityExpress network by the station Limburg Süd on the Cologne-Frankfurt high-speed rail line.

The Bundesautobahn 3 runs adjacent to the town.
