Lincoln is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 20,898 at the 2000 census. Lincoln is located in northeastern Rhode Island, and is north of Providence. Limestone quarrying has occurred here since colonial times. Lincoln is a town consisting of seven villages they include Manville, Lonsdale, Saylesville, Limerock, Albion, Fairlawn and Quinville. Lincoln has four elementary schools, one junior high school and one high school. A new middle school is set to open in September of 2006.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 49.1 km² (19.0 mi²). 47.2 km² (18.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it (3.80%) is water.It also has Lincoln Woods and Lincoln Park.
Demographics
As of the census² of 2000, there were 20,898 people, 8,243 households, and 5,778 families residing in the town. The population density was 442.6/km² (1,146.6/mi²). There were 8,508 housing units at an average density of 180.2/km² (466.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.55% White, 0.84% African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.75% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.64% of the population.There were 8,243 households out of which 32.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $47,815, and the median income for a family was $61,257. Males had a median income of $41,508 versus $30,089 for females. The per capita income for the town was $26,779. About 3.9% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 7.3% of those age 65 or over.
