Lipetsk Oblast (Russian: ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Formed on January 6, 1954. Its administrative center is the city of Lipetsk. The area of the oblast is 24,100 km². The population is 1,213,499 (2002).

Geography

Lipetsk Oblast borders Ryazan Oblast (NE), Tambov Oblast (E), Voronezh Oblast (S), Kursk Oblast (SW), Oryol Oblast (W) and Tula Oblast (NW).

The sights

The world’s first hyperboloid structure – the steel open-work lattice tower of amazing beauty is located in Polibino, Dankoskiy area of the Lipetsk region. The hyperboloid tower was built and patented in 1896 by the Great Russian engineer and scientist Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov. The hyperboloid structures were subsequently built by many famous architects: Gaudi, Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer.
