- Apache County, Arizona: Apache is named after the Apache Native American people.
- Cochise County, Arizona: Cochise is named after Cochise, the Apache Native American leader.
- Coconino County, Arizona: Coconino is named after the Coconino Native American people, a Hopi designation for Havasupai and Yavapai people.
- Gila County, Arizona: Gila is named after the Gila River.
- Graham County, Arizona: Graham is named after Mount Graham.
- Greenlee County, Arizona: Greenlee is named after Mason Greenlee, a pioneer.
- La Paz County, Arizona: La Paz is named after La Paz, Arizona, a historic boomtown on the Colorado River. La paz means the peace in Spanish.
