Main player characters
Cloud Strife
- "Originally a member of SOLDIER, he is now a mercenary who will take any job..."
- The game's lead protagonist. A self-proclaimed ex-SOLDIER-turned mercenary employed by AVALANCHE, and the main character of the game. Cloud is portrayed as a confused and conflicted individual with an occasionally arrogant attitude. He wears a purple SOLDIER uniform and is distinguished by his glowing blue eyes, which are a sign of having been exposed to mako. He also sports spiked blonde hair for which he is often made fun of by his peers — particularly Barret. He wields a giant Buster Sword in combat. Initially a cold-hearted mercenary who refuses to aid AVALANCHE for any reason except money, in time Cloud comes to take up the cause of the planet whole-heartedly, largely as a result of Aerith's influence.
Barret Wallace
- "Head of the underground resistance movement AVALANCHE, Barret depends on brute strength and his 'Gun-arm' to see him through..."
- The leader of AVALANCHE, Barret is a man with a powerful build and a deep-seated hatred of everything Shin-Ra. Barret mistrusts Cloud at first because of the mecenary's past affiliation with the corporation. He lost his right forearm during an encounter with Shin-Ra years ago and had it replaced with a powerful gun prosthetic.
Tifa Lockhart
- "Bright and optimistic, Tifa always cheers up the others when they're down. But don't let her looks fool you, she can decimate almost any enemy with her fists..."
Aerith Gainsborough
- "Young, beautiful, and somewhat mysterious, Aerith met Cloud while selling flowers on the streets of Midgar..."
(aka Aeris Gainsborough): A young woman who sells flowers on the streets of Midgar and is sought after by Shin-Ra's research department. She asks Cloud to be her bodyguard after a run-in with the Turks, and subsequently joins AVALANCHE. Throughout the game, there is a large amount of romantic tension between herself, Cloud and Tifa, influenced by the player's own choices.Aerith has long brown hair she keeps in a braid with pink bows and vivid green eyes, and wears a red mini-jacket with a pink dress. A loyal and self-sacrificing type, Aerith never puts herself ahead of helping others, and would give anything to save the planet. Throughout the game, Aerith helps to bring Cloud out of his shell. Aerith was the last Cetra.
Red XIII
- "Just as his name implies, he is an animal with fire-red fur. But under his fierce exterior is an intelligence surpassing that of any human's..."
- Strong, fierce, and coated with fire-red fur, Red XIII is a large and powerful creature with a strong intellect and warm heart to match. His species is possessed of great longevity, which surprises the party when they learn that his 48 years only amounts to adolescence by his species standards. Though his real name is Nanaki, he is given the name Red XIII by Hojo, and the name sticks when the party rescue him from Hojo's laboratory.
Yuffie Kisaragi
- "Although you'd never know it by looking at her, Yuffie comes from a long line of Ninja..."
- The spunky young ninja of Wutai and Godo's daughter. A self-proclaimed "Materia Hunter", Yuffie is in fact a pickpocket and thief who joins the party hoping to steal their Materia, with the intention of restoring her country, Wutai, to its former glory. Although Yuffie is a skillful ninja, she has her weaknesses: namely, she is prone to sea and air sickness and shows signs of kleptomania.
Cait Sith
- "Cait Sith rides on the back of a huge stuffed Mog he magically brought to life..."
- Appearing as a stuffed, talking cat, Cait Sith is friendly but often unreliable. He rides on the back of a stuffed moogle, which does all of the pair's fighting. Cait Sith is eventually revealed to be an animatronic robot that Reeve Tuesti, Shin-Ra's head of Urban Development, used to infiltrate AVALANCHE. However, over time, Reeve came to care for his new friends and their cause, and used Cait Sith as a way for him to help them. Cait Sith sacrifices himself at one point in the game to aid the group, but a second Cait Sith immediately shows up to replace him.
Vincent Valentine
- "A mystical man, stern and upright while at the same time dark and mysterious..."
- A dark, brooding and sardonic young man whose heart has been numbed by a tragic love. Vincent is a former Turks gunman who was experimented on by Hojo approximately thirty years before the start of the game, and consequently developed superhuman abilities and characteristics. Cloud and the others eventually discover him sleeping inside a coffin in the basement of the Shinra Mansion, where he joins them in their quest.
Cid Highwind
- "Cid is a tough talking, warm-hearted old pilot who hasn't forgotten his dreams..."
- A rather grouchy and foul-mouthed (but nonetheless warm-hearted) character, Cid is a pilot who dreams of travelling into space. He lives with Shera (Sierra), an assistant who forced Cid to abort his past chance of launching his rocket into space, saving Cid's life by checking oxygen tanks she correctly feared were faulty during the lift-off sequence. Cid designed the airship Highwind and also owns the Tiny Bronco, a small plane which Cloud and the others use as a boat in the game after it is downed by Shin-Ra. Cid wields spears and lances in battle.
Major non-player characters
Sephiroth
- The game's primary villain. Said to be the strongest member of SOLDIER ever, Sephiroth rose to a prominent rank at an early age. After a traumatic incident in which he learned of his true origins, he plans to become god-like by wounding the Planet with Meteor and absorbing the entirety of the Lifestream sent to heal the damage. He manipulates Cloud (and the party, by extension) over the course of the game.
Zack
(unofficially, 'Zax', 'Zacks') was a SOLDIER 1st Class from Gongaga. Though laid back and a flirt, Zack follows a moral code of loyality to his friends, striving to protect people above all else, and fighting those who have no respect for life. While stationed in Midgar, he met and dated Aerith.Aerith: "What a shock..... I didn't know Zack was from this town." / Cloud: "You know him?" / Aerith: "Didn't I tell you? He was my first love."(Final Fantasy VII) Five years prior to the start of the game, he is sent, along with Cloud, Sephiroth and some other soldiers, to investigate reports of monsters causing disruptions in the vicinity of the Mt. Nibel mako reactor. After Sephiroth's massacre of Nibelheim's villagers, Cloud and Zack are taken prisoner in the basement of the Shinra Mansion and used as test subjects for Hojo's Sephiroth "Clone" Project, an experiment designed to test Hojo's Jenova Reunion Theory by injecting subjects with Jenova cells. However, after four years, Zack breaks out of his confinement and carries the incapacitated Cloud with him during their escape. Zack's ability to escape from his imprisonment is due to the fact that he — being an individual full of self-confidence, and, as a result, a strong will — was unencumbered by the potentially negative side-effects of mako treatment (known as "mako poisoning") and had handled the treatment before when being infused with mako as part of the procedure to become a member of SOLDIER. He gives Cloud some of his clothes and gets them transport to Midgar, where he hopes to become a mercenary. However, before arriving in Midgar, they are ambushed by Shin-Ra soldiers. Zack is shot to death, while Cloud, too sick to move, is simply left to die on his own. Subsequently, Cloud takes Zack's persona — either due to his mako poisoning or a side-effect of the Jenova cells Hojo injected into him as part of the Sephiroth "Clone" Project — and Buster Sword. Zack essentially lives on in Cloud for much of the game, the latter having adopted many of his memories and character traits. After the events of Final Fantasy, Cloud planted the Buster Sword around where Zack died, serving as his friend's gravemarker.Zack is a playable character in , where more of his past may be revealed. He also appears in flashbacks and accompanies Aerith in Advent Children, in which he is voiced by Kenichi Suzumura in Japanese version and Rick Gomez in the English version.AVALANCHE
Biggs
- Member of AVALANCHE. Slightly cocky and arrogant at first, he ends up respecting Cloud. Biggs is named after Luke Skywalker's childhood friend, Biggs Darklighter, of the Star Wars series. Killed by Shin-Ra.
Jessie
- Member of AVALANCHE. Explosives technician that fakes IDs for herself and fellow members so they could pass through Shin-Ra's security checkpoints without being detected. She has a fascination with gadgetry, explosives and other "flashy stuff"Jessie: "I like this kinda stuff. Bombs and monitors... you know, flashy stuff."(Final Fantasy VII), and gives Cloud a lesson on the Midgar rail system and the structure of the city itself. The player is given the option to have Cloud flirt with her a few times. She is shown to be in a relationship with Biggs during Elmyra's flashback as to how she came to mother Aerith. She is eventually killed by Shin-Ra.
Wedge
- Member of AVALANCHE. Close friends with Biggs, Wedge is very warm-hearted and kind to others, but he easily loses his composure when nervous. Wedge is named after Luke Skywalker's wingman, Wedge Antilles, of the Star Wars series. Killed by Shin-Ra.
Shin-Ra
Executives
President Shinra
): Head of the Shin-Ra Company (the "King VERMIN!", as Barrett puts it). He hopes to use Aerith's Cetra knowledge to find the 'Promised Land', which is a mako-rich environment.President Shinra: "It's been said the Promised Land is very fertile. ...If the land is fertile..." / Barret: "Then there's gotta be Mako!" / President Shinra: "Exactly. That is why our money sucking Mako Reactor is a necessity. The abundant Mako will just come out on its own. That is where Neo-Midgar will be built. Shinra's new glory..."(Final Fantasy VII) He is discovered dead, with Sephiroth's Masamune still in his back. His last name is the same as a young Al Bhed child in Final Fantasy X-2 who mentions finding a source of energy that could be harvested in the farplane.
Rufus Shinra
- The son of President Shinra, and the vice president of Shin-Ra, he becomes the president after his father's death. Unlike his father, he plans to control the people with fear rather than with money.Rufus: "...Old man tried to control the world with money. It seems to have been working. The population thought that Shinra would protect them. Work at Shinra, get your pay. If a terrorist attacks, the Shinra army will help you. It looks perfect on the outside. But, I do things differently. I'll control the world with fear. It takes too much to do it like my old man."(Final Fantasy VII) He is a ruthless entrepreneur who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Eventually, he and Cloud's group put their differences aside to fight their common foes, Meteor and Sephiroth. Rufus is thought to have died when his office in the Shin-Ra headquarters was hit by an energy blast from Diamond WEAPON. In , however, Rufus returns with the intention of repairing the damage his company had caused to the world, despite being in a wheelchair due to the disease geostigma. He plays a significant role in the story, having come into possession of Jenova's remains.
Heidegger
- Head of Shin-Ra's Public Safety Maintenance Department, which is simply a euphemism for Shin-Ra's military, the elite SOLDIER unit and the Turks. He died when the Proud Clod (a mecha he and Scarlet were riding in) exploded after a battle with AVALANCHE. Possibly named after the German philosopher Martin Heidegger (1889-1976).
Scarlet
- Head of Shin-Ra's Weapons Development Department. Aspires to make the perfect weapon, but doesn't trust Heidegger to use it properly. The Shin-Ra executive responsible for the destruction of Barret Wallace's home town of Corel and for the loss of Barret's forearm. Helps in creating a large mako cannon, Sister Ray, used to fight WEAPON. Like Rufus, she is both cunning and ruthless. She died along with Heidegger in the explosion of the Proud Clod.
Reeve Tuesti
- Head of the Urban Development Department, he used Cait Sith as a way for him to spy on — and later aid — AVALANCHE. Along with Mayor Domino, he is one of the few officials in Shin-Ra who has a genuine concern for the common people. He is briefly arrested by Heidegger's men after the apparent death of Rufus. Reeve later founded the World Restoration Organization (WRO), an organization devoted to the environmental reclamation of the planet after the collapse of the Shin-Ra Company. Reeve plays a significant role in and has a voice-over cameo in Advent Children provided by Jamieson Price (English) & Banjō Ginga (Japanese).
Palmer
- The incompetent head of Shin-Ra's failed Space Exploration Department, Palmer is a bouncy, overweight man with some childlike behavior. He goes with Rufus to Rocket Town to steal Cid's plane, the Tiny Bronco. Although he is hit by a truck as he tries to escape Cloud and company, he — along with Reeve and Rufus — is one of the few Shin-Ra executives to survive the events of Final Fantasy VII. However, he has yet to make any further appearances in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.
The Turks
Tseng
- The stern but polite and calm leader of the Turks. He has known Aerith since she was a child and harbors romantic feelings for her. He was grievously wounded after a confrontation with Sephiroth in the Temple of the Ancients. He returns in Advent Children with the other Turks.
Elena
- The newest member of the Turks, she is a young woman with short blonde hair, enlisted to make up for Reno's leave of absence when he sustains injuries in a fight with AVALANCHE. She takes her job very seriously, but is the most naive and incompetent member of the group. She has a crush on Tseng and temporarily blames Cloud for his injuries received at the hands of Sephiroth.
Reno
- A member of the Turks, he is a lanky man with unkempt bright red hair and a ponytail. He has bright aqua-colored eyes and always wears goggles on his forehead. He is quite laid-back and doesn't take his job very seriously, but he is nonetheless very good at what he does and takes pride in it. He wields a metal rod. He has been Rude's partner for six years as of Final Fantasy VII.
Rude
- A member of the Turks, he is a tall, naturally bald man with a goatee that always wears sunglasses. He usually appears with his friend and long-time partner Reno. Rude is somewhat taciturn and usually lets Reno do the talking. He prefers to fight with his fists (using a sort of grappling/boxing style as opposed to Tifa's martial arts) and has a crush on Tifa, though nothing ever develops of it. His abilities are also far beyond that of a normal person, much like Reno.
Researchers
Professor Hojo
- The head of Shin-Ra's Science Department at the time of the game. He is a mad scientist with a God complex, undertaking radical experiments without any regard for ethics or the potential consequences of his research on his test subjects. Hojo regards the subjects of his experiments as mere "specimens," though most are human or otherwise sentient.
Hojo's notoriety begins approximately thirty years prior to the start of the game in Nibelheim, where he was sent by Shin-Ra to assist Professor Gast and Lucrecia with the Jenova Project, a project headed up by Gast and intended to produce modern day humans with the abilities of the Cetra. It was believed that this goal may be realized by testing the effects of Jenova cells on an unborn child. Thus, the three Shin-Ra scientists — with Lucrecia and Hojo's complete cooperation — injected some of Jenova's cells into the womb of Lucrecia, who was pregnant with Hojo's child at the time. The child that would come of this experiment was Sephiroth. At some undisclosed point in time, Gast abandoned his research due to a guilty conscience and Hojo continued his increasingly immoral experiments, first at Nibelheim and, later, the Shin-Ra building, using such unwilling test subjects as Vincent, Cloud, Zack, Red XIII, and uncounted others. Much of this later research involved the effects of Jenova's cells, leading to the development of the Sephiroth "Clones" Project (not to be confused with genetic duplicates; the term merely indicates that experiments similar to those conducted on Sephiroth were condcuted on ordinary humans). Ultimately, Hojo tired of experimenting on others and injected himself with Jenova cells, mutating into a super-being and willingly attempting to give Sephiroth the power of the Planet so that he could witness his most esteemed experiment reach its ultimate stage of development.Hojo: "Ha, ha, ha... Sephiroth seems to be counting on the energy. So I'm going to lend him a hand." / Cloud: "Why!? Why do that!?" ... / Hojo: "My son is in need of power and help. ...That's the only reason." ... / Hojo: "I've injected Jenova's cells into my own body! Heee, hee, hee! Here are...... Heee, hee, hee! ...my results!!"(Final Fantasy VII) While attempting to carry out this process, he was mortally wounded by AVALANCHE and was left for dead.
As the Maiden who Travels the Planet novella revealed, Hojo's soul was now unable to properly diffuse through the Lifestream as in accordance with the natural order due to the experiments he had conducted on himself, and he allowed his spiritual energy to be assimilated into Sephiroth's body. However, as revealed in , Hojo managed to download his mind into the World Network as a backup before death. However, it would be two years before Hojo's mind was to be activated upon the World Network's restoration. Deciding to use Omega WEAPON to attempt what Sephiroth had, Hojo took over the body of the 'in-stasis' Deep Ground SOLDIER commander Weiß. During the events of Dirge of Cerberus, Hojo had the Deep Ground adbuct those not under the effects of Geostigma to serve as incubators of enough pure Spirit Energy to enable Weiß's body to asborb Omega WEAPON. However, Weiß managed to fight back for control over his body and committed suicide, taking Hojo with him.
Professor Gast
- The former head of Shin-Ra's Science Research Department and Aerith's father. Gast seems to be a noble man who pursues knowledge for its own sake, rather than for the power it can bring. Gast finds Jenova during an excavation in the Northern Crater. After Jenova is transported to Nibelheim for further study of her origin and nature, Gast comes to the incorrect conclusion that the creature is a Cetra, and Shin-Ra sends Hojo and Lucrecia to assist him. Believing that they may be able to produce a modern-day Cetra, the scientists inject Jenova cells into the womb of the pregnant Lucrecia, who was carrying Hojo's child. At some undisclosed point in time, Gast leaves the project with a guilty conscience, although he doesn't officially leave Shin-Ra. Gast continues his research on the Ancients alone and meets Ifalna — one of the last surviving members of the Ancients' race — at Icicle Lodge. There, Gast carries out a series of interviews with Ifalna, and in time, they fall in love and have a child together: Aerith. However, shortly after Aerith's birth, Hojo killed Gast during the attempt to capture both Ifalna and Aerith for further study.
Lucrecia Crescent
- Sephiroth's biological mother. A young female scientist who served as an assistant to Grimoire Valentine, Vincent Valentine's father, having been dispatched to him by Shin-Ra. Her own unchecked ambitions into scientific study results in Grimoire's death, as he dies while saving her. Unable to face Vincent with the guilt she felt over his father's death, she severed ties with him.
Disgusted with all that she had done and the changes Jenova's cells had wrought in her own body, she attempted to kill herself. However, she was unable to easily die because of the presence of Jenova's cells in her body, and, thus, she isolated herself in a cave located in a remote location.Lucrecia: "I wanted to disappear... I couldn't be with anyone... I wanted to die... But the Jenova inside me wouldn't let me die..."(Final Fantasy VII) She is later discovered by Vincent during the time frame of Final Fantasy VII, willingly encased in a large mako crystal.
Other supporting cast
Bugenhagen
is Red XIII/Nanaki's adopted grandfather), an eccentric old man who moves about, floating on a green ball. Formerly a Shin-Ra worker, he retired to his home of Cosmo Canyon — where he is the elder of the Bugah Tribe — to pursue the Study of Planet Life, and where he finds a peaceful harmony between technology and nature. He has an observatory at the top of Cosmo Canyon, and provides vital information to AVALANCHE regarding how to stop Sephiroth and Meteor. Bugenhagen dies on Disc 3 from old age, shortly before the final battle with Sephiroth.
Denzel
is a young orphan who Cloud and Tifa have taken into their care. He appears only in Advent Children, but much of his backstory is revealed in the novella [On the Way to a Smile], which was published shortly before the Japanese release of Advent Children. In the movie he is one of a number of people who have come down with the fatal "Geostigma" disease.
Don Corneo
is a perverted crime-boss of lower Midgar who resides in Wall Market. After being confronted by Cloud, Tifa and Aerith — who all threaten to neuter him — he reveals Shin-Ra's plan to destroy Sector 7's support pillar. He then becomes a target of Shin-Ra for having released this information. Later, after hiding out from the Turks who were ordered to kill him, Corneo kidnaps Yuffie and Elena in Wutai with the intentions of forcing one of them to be his bride. After a brief alliance between AVALANCHE and the Turks, he is killed by Reno. The Don had two "pets", Aps and Rapps, both of which he set against AVALANCHE.
Dyne
was Barret's best friend and the father of Marlene. He was believed dead after Shin-Ra attacked his hometown of Corel, though he survived, and similarly to Barret, had his severed left forearm replaced with a gun prosthetic. Going insane, Dyne blamed Barret for the death of his wife and the destruction of his town, eventually becoming the "Boss" of Corel Prison beneath the Gold Saucer. He had become a twisted, self-loathing man with a lust for killing. Several years later, he was finally reunited with Barret in the prison and insisted upon a duel with him. Afterwards, he made Barret promise to take care of Marlene and — unable to live with what he had become — committed suicide by falling off a cliff. Also the name of Zidane's Trance actions in Final Fantasy IX.
Elmyra Gainsborough
Aerith's adoptive mother, Elmyra Gainsborough, or , discovers Aerith and the dying Ifalna after their escape from Shin-Ra headquarters. Ifalna asks Elmyra to care for her daughter before dying, and Elmyra adopts Aerith as her own, raising her and becoming aware of the young girl's developing Cetra abilities. Elmyra later takes care of Marlene while Barret is pursuing Sephiroth, but both are subsequently taken into custody by Reeve Tuesti and relocated to Kalm. Reeve, however, ensures their safety and they are later released. He later has the sad duty of informing them of Aerith's death at the hands of Sephiroth.Genesis
Originally known only as "G". Genesis is a mysterious character who appeared in both Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. He has Mako eyes and one wing, which resembles Sephiroth's but is on his left shoulder instead of his right like Sephiroth's. It's also thought by some due to the fact that Genesis is an individual with no known inheritance of Jenova cells, but with bright Mako eyes and a large angel wing that he was a result of the experiments conducted by Grimoire Valentine, Hojo, and Professor Gast, long before the creation of Sephiroth. He is said to be a central character in Crisis Core and a high-ranking member of SOLDIER, like Sephiroth once was. He wears a red overcoat over his SOLDIER armour, which is exactly like Sephiroth's.
Ifalna
is Aerith's birth mother and the last full-blooded Cetra. Found by Professor Gast in Icicle Lodge, they record a series of interviews together. The two fall in love, and she gives birth to their daughter, Aerith. Twenty days after Aerith's birth, Hojo has Gast shot and Aerith and Ifalna apprehended, and then taken to the Shin-Ra headquarters in Midgar. Ifalna escapes seven years later with Aerith, and they make it as far as the Sector 7 train station in Midgar. Exhausted and wounded, Ifalna entrusts Aerith's care to Elmyra Gainsborough and dies.
Jenova
Once incorrectly believed to be an Ancient, the remains of were found by Professor Gast and became the subject of extensive research and experimentation by Shin-Ra. The creature is, in actuality, an extraterrestrial life form that crashlanded on the Planet some 2,000 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII. The creature is an instinctual being that seeks to destroy. The few Cetra that survived succeeded in sealing Jenova deep within the Northern Crater, where it would be discovered two thousand years later.
Marlene
is the young daughter of Barret's friends, Dyne and Eleanor. Adopted by Barret after Eleanor's death during the burning of Corel and left with Elmyra during the game, she is kidnapped by Reeve. At the end of the game, she has been sent to Kalm by Reeve to keep her safe. She is voiced by Miyu Tsuzurahara in the Japanese version of Advent Children and Grace Rolek in the English version. In Advent Children, she appears to live with Cloud and Tifa and another orphan named Denzel while Barret is away searching for new power sources.
Shera
Shera, or in the original Japanese, is a soft-spoken and calm methodical scientist working on the Shin-Ra No. 26 who ultimately caused Cid to cancel its launch: she feared one of the oxygen tanks was malfunctioning and refused to leave when Cid ordered her to. To save her life, Cid stopped the launch, but resented her for this, believing that she had cost him his dream of being the first man in space. However, he later came to have great respect for her after finding out that she had been right all along about the oxygen tank. Shera also saved his life on the later successful rocket launch by helping to remove debris trapping Cid on the rocket, as well as by repairing the emergency escape pod so that the party could escape the doomed rocket. Cid named the airship seen in Advent Children after her and is revealed in Dirge of Cerberus to have also married her.The WEAPON
The are immense, biomechanical entities created by the Planet as a defense mechanism and are activated when Meteor was invoked. Each WEAPON serves to exterminate everything that threatens the planet, including humans.
Zangan
is Tifa's martial arts instructor, and rescued her after she was wounded by Sephiroth. In Final Fantasy VII, his letter to Tifa (found in her piano) shed light on the events following the burning of Nibelheim and the coverup that ensued. Zangan was quite active and possessed some ability with magic, using Cure spells on Tifa as he transported her to Midgar.
Minor characters
- : Cross-dressing owner of the gym in Wall Market, he offers a wig as a prize for a squatting competition. His name in the Japanese version, Aniki, carries a mob connotation not apparent in the English term used, though it literally has the same meaning.
- Chocobo Sage: A mysterious — and rather forgetful — old man who lives in the north. He periodically offers advice on Chocobo breeding and sells the most expensive greens. The Chocobo Sage bears great resemblance to the Magi Ghost from the original Dragon Warrior for NES.
- : Manager of the Gold Saucer. When he hears that reports of a man with a gun for an arm has murdered several Shin-Ra soldiers in the Gold Saucer, he arrests Barret's group and places them in Corel Prison, but releases them after learning that Dyne was at fault instead. Later, he lends the Keystone to them that will open the Temple of the Ancients. His favorite attraction in the Gold Saucer is the Battle Arena, where he makes Cloud fight for the Keystone.
- : The mayor of Midgar by title only; he's actually a figurehead and holds no real power over the city. Despite appearances and the belief of Shin-Ra, Domino is actually shrewd and strongly anti Shin-Ra.
- : An elder in Cosmo Canyon who explains a brief history of Professor Gast, his discovery of Jenova and his subsequent resignation from Shin-Ra.
- : Details some information regarding the Lifestream and the Promised Land.
- : Dyne's wife and the birthmother of Marlene; she died when Corel was burned to the ground.
- Ester, or in the original Japanese: Chocobo Racing manager assigned to Cloud.
- : Yuffie's father, and the leader of Wutai. Wutai was the enemy Shin-Ra fought in a war that occurred around the time of Sephiroth's early life. As a condition of its surrender, Wutai was not allowed to possess any materia and was reduced to a tourist town. Like his daughter, Yuffie, Godo has a bit of an obsession with materia.
- Chocobo Bill, or in the original Japanese: Owner of the Chocobo Farm.
- Chocobo Billy, or in the original Japanese: Choco Bill's grandson, he sells greens and deals with Chocobo mating.
- Chole, or in the original Japanese: Choco Billy's younger sister, who helps out in the stables. She also writes down the Chocobo Sage's notes about breeding.
- Hart: The mayor's assistant.
- : Once a resident of Icicle Inn, he now lives at the base of Gaea's Cliffs and tells the party how to overcome the "biting cold."
- : Chocobo Jockey. Rides Teioh, a Chocobo that will always have better stats than the player's.
- : A young man from Sector 5 who has had a crush on Tifa since their childhoods in Niebelheim. He leaves Midgar and moves to Costa del Sol. In the short story "The Case of Denzel", apart of the novella , Johnny decides to open his own cafe in Edge City, Johnny's Heaven, after being inspired by Tifa's decision to build a new Seventh Heaven pub in the city. He would often tell his customers about how Tifa inspired him and would unknowlingly lose most of his potentially regular customers to Seventh Heaven by doing so.
- Kalm Traveler: An old man in Kalm looking for a Guidebook, Earth Harp, and Desert Rose. Willing to trade Underwater materia, Master Magic, Master Command and Master Summon materia — as well as a Gold Chocobo — for the items.
- Kotch & Skotch, or in the original Japanese: Two of Don Corneo's lackeys. Their names, taken together, essentially mean "Here & There." Possibly due to the fact that this joke would go over the heads of an English-speaking audience, Sony changed them to "Kotch" and "Skotch."
- : Runs the prisoner racing program in Corel Prison but is really a subordinate of Dyne.
- Mukki: A homosexual bodybuilder first encountered in the Honeybee Inn. He makes his way to the Costa del Sol bar. He flirts occasionally with Cloud, who seems bemused and embarrassed by him.
- Myrna, or in the original Japanese: Barret's wife, who died when Corel was burned to the ground.

Advent Children characters
The villains of the story are "shinentai", or "Sephiroth Remnants"; the remains of Sephiroth's will and spirit in physical, "larval" form. They seek out Jenova's head, unkowningly spurred on by Sephiroth's will with a obsession to be with their "mother", through which Sephiroth can be reborn. They each reflect an aspect of Sephiroth's character, and refer to Cloud as their Big Brother. They are able to summon monstrous embodiments of "tainted lifestream" called Shadow Creepers to their aid and apparently are weak against the effects of Lifestream-influenced water.- : The leader and youngest member of the Sephiroth Remnants, Kadaj has medium-length silver hair and uses a double-bladed katana called the "Souba" as his primary weapon. He embodies Sephiroth's cruelty and insanity. He refers to anyone with the Geostigma or Jenova cells as his "siblings", and Jenova itself as "Mother". Using the Bahamut Materia, he summoned Bahamut SIN to destroy Edge, a city formed just around Midgar, and search for Jenova's remains. Though the summon was defeated, Kadaj obtained Jenova's cells after they were dropped from a building by Rufus Shinra and was pursued by Cloud to the ruins of Midgar. Once he absorbed Jenova's cells, Kadaj transformed into Sephiroth, who took over the fight from there until he abandoned Kadaj's body after the mortal injury dealt on him. Kadaj died in Cloud's arms as his spirit energy was purged of Sephiroth's will and guided into the Lifestream by Aerith's voice, who he accepted as the mother that he and his 'brothers' had been longing for.
- : The long-haired brother, as well as the one with the calmest demeanor. He is the embodiment of Sephiroth's enigmatic allure. He specialises in firearms, wielding a gun called "Velvet Nightmare". He shot Cloud before meeting his end in an explosion with Loz atop the Shin-Ra headquarters. Shot Cloud in the back at the end to bring Cloud to the Promised Land with them.
- : The short-haired brother. He embodies Sephiroth's violent streak and masculinity. Despite his older appearance, Loz is the most immature of the three and is upset easily. Nonetheless, he displays extreme feats of brute strength and speed compared to his 'brothers'. Loz is the brawler of the group. He has short silver hair and is very muscular. He wields a unique weapon called the "Dual Hound" most of the time, though he uses a Velvet Nightmare like Yazoo's. He and Yazoo were dying from the healing rain and attempted to take down Cloud shortly after Kadaj's death so they could "play" with him more. As a last resort, when Cloud charged them, they used the Materia to performed an explosive kamikaze attack that not only took them out, but gravely injured Cloud.
Dirge of Cerberus Characters
- : A female WRO scientist with a prosthetic left arm that serves as her life-support system. Before the game's release, it was speculated that she was somehow connected to Lucrecia, based on their physical resemblance. She originally appeared in Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII.
- : Vincent's father and Lucrecia's mentor. His death resulted in Lucrecia distancing herself from Vincent.
Zvet
The are highest ranking elite squad within the Deep Ground Soldiers. All of the members of the group are named after colors, hence the group's name, Zvet, which is Russian for colors. Five members appear in the single player mode, and at least one more member appears in the online mode. It is currently unknown how many total members there will be, or how many are still alive at the end of the game.- : A member of Zvet, known as "Azul the Cerulean". His name means blue in Spanish and Portuguese. He first appeared in Before Crisis. He uses a large cannon as his weapon and can transform into a Behemoth-like creature.
- : A young girl who wields two energy spears. Her name means orange in Urdu, a reference to her amber-colored eyes. She appears to be Shalua's younger sister. Commonly seen along with Azul, as she is helping him hunt down Vincent. She is the only member of Zvet that remains "colorless", a plot point which is detailed in the storyline of the game's multiplayer modes. She is the only surving member by the game's end.
- : A member of Zvet, known as "Rosso the Crimson". Her name means red in Italian. She wields a two-sided blade weapon, and is almost playfully brutal.
- : One of the members of Zvet, called "Nero the Deep Darkness", he refers to Vice as his brother. His body is always covered in darkness, and the player can not see his figure clearly. The darkness Nero controls draws in everything, and it is possible for him to take them out of it. It is said that the restraint like outfit he wears is to keep his power under control. Though mortally wounded by Vice, he fused himself with Vice's body to give him the power to "fight" Hojo's hold on him. His name means black in Italian.
- : A mysterious SOLDIER who commands the DGS. Called "Seiger Vice the Immaculate Emperor", he declares a hunt on the world three years after the Meteor crisis. All Deep Ground SOLDIERS fear his power, and follow him, but it's said that they rarely see him directly. He has spiky gray hair and wields two katana-rifle hybrids (sometimes referred to as "gunblades" by fans, though they're notably different from the Final Fantasy VIII weapons that are officially referred to by that name). He is actually housing the computer-simulated personality of Hojo, and becomes possessed by this. This emulated version of Hojo, through Vice's body, had the DGS adbuct those not under the effects of Geostigma to serve as incubators of enough pure Mako to enable Vice to asborb Omega. However, Vice managed to fight back control over his body and committed sucide, taking Hojo with him. His name means 'white' in German.
