The Precursors
The Precursors (プリカーソル) were an ancient race in the fictional universe of Jak and Daxter. They are the equivalent of gods and created all planets and all life. They created giant robots to show their power and their followers crafted statues to illustrate what they thought the Precursors looked like, although their ideas are now known to be terribly inaccurate.
Precursors had the ability to grant people power in exchange for valuables. In , their origin and fate were partially explained. If you translated the border around the game manual map, you would have found out a little bit more. The Precursors showed themselves as oracles, beings with large nose like trunks. Even two precursor robots were discovered, the second which was modified by Gol and Maia. In Jak II, they granted Jak Dark Eco powers in exchange for Metal Head skull gems. It was revealed that the Precursors were all but wiped out by the Metal Heads, and their sole hope of survival was the Precursor Stone, which was said to be the last Precursor Egg. Jak 3's story revealed this to be false, a shocking twist near the end of game reveals that the Precursors were ottsels (in a scene very similar to the revelation of the wizard in The Wizard of Oz), and Daxter's curse was really a blessing. Count Veger and Daxter's girlfriend Tess were also transformed into ottsels. Count Veger had wanted to evolve into a Precursor and was horrified to find out they were ottsels, but got transformed anyway. Tess became one because she wanted to have a pair of pants like Daxter's, and therefore, getting not only the same pants, but the same pants size, as well. This seemed to work out to Daxter's advantage...for reasons many fans will not name.
Ashelin
-->Ashelin (アシュリン) is the sassy, tough-as-nails daughter of the deceased Baron Praxis, and she was once a leader in the Krimzon Guard along with Errol in Jak II. Although she fought alongside the KG, she supplied information to the Underground since she had no real love for her father's ways, and wished that Haven City could be a better place. After her father's murder by Metal Kor, she became the Governor of Haven City, and she founded the New Krimzon Guard, which later became the Freedom League. At this stage, she seemed to be flirtatious with Torn, saying that she was "dying to see him dance". One year later in Jak 3, when Haven City became a battlefield between the KG, the Freedom League and the Metal Heads, she fought to bring Jak back to the city after he was banished by Veger to the Wasteland. Soon after Jak arrived back in the city, she disbanded the City Council and deprived Veger of any command. Interestingly, Ashelin seems to display more interest in Jak around this time, even sharing a passionate moment with him after he defeated Errol's Terraformer. When the heroes were tricked into taking part in a combat racing championship in , Ashelin quickly developed a tense rivalry with Rayn, believing that she was in on Krew's plan. She seems back on track in her relationship with Torn, and it is still not known what exactly persuaded her to devote her attention to Jak in Jak 3.
Ashelin is never seen without her old KG uniform, and she carries a handgun in combat. She also has her own special HellCat Cruiser, which doesn't seem to be restricted to the two hover zones that all other air vehicles are, since it can fly high above and even outside of the city.
She has been voiced by Susan Eisenberg in all the games she has appeared in so far. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Yuu Asakawa (浅川 悠).
Baron Praxis
-->Baron Praxis (バロン・プラクシス) took the throne of Haven City from Damas, and led Haven City harshly. He even made deals with the Metal Head Leader. Praxis attempted to doublecross his partner by creating a dark warrior but that failed and Jak rebelled against him.
Praxis then stole the Precursor Stone from Mar's tomb and attempted to blow up the Metal Head Nest but was killed when the Leader realized his betrayal and blasted him into a large tower of eco drums.
He is voiced by notable voice actor Clancy Brown. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Daisuke Gouri (郷里 大輔).
Oracles
-->The Precursor Oracles (プリカーソル・オラクル) are ancient Precursor artifacts commonly found in far off places. They speak, but are supposedly pre-recorded, as the Precursors barely exist by the time Jak finds them. They range in size from 7 to around 70ft, and all speak in the same voice (although in Jak II it is a different voice from Jak 3). There is a little twist at the end of Jak 3, when one of them inadvertently opens, and reveals the Precursors to be nothing more than ottsels. One could find it confusing how such large things can be made by 2ft. tall "rats", as they are called.
In Jak & Daxter, the Oracle was played by Michael Gollam, and from Jak II onward, by Richard McGonagle. In the Japanese versions of the original Japanese trilogy, it is assumed that the universal seiyu was Seiji Sasaki (佐々木 誠二).
Samos Hagai
-->Samos Hagai (セイジィじいさん) is a Green Sage and a key figure in the Freedom League. Born in Haven City many years ago, he led the Underground movement against Baron Praxis while going under the alias of "the Shadow". When the Metal Heads attacked Haven City several years prior to Praxis' death, only Samos was able to keep them from taking over the entire city; instead, only Dead Town was destroyed. Samos looked after the Kid, the younger version of Jak, alongside Kor, believing him to be the lost heir to the city. When Mar's Tomb was discovered by Jak, Samos, along with Tess and Kor, was thrown into the Fortress' jail, where he met his older version, who had come from about two centuries in the past through a Rift Gate along with Jak, Daxter, and Keira. The two Samoses often bickered, and Jak and Daxter eventually bring young Samos the Life Seed, a seed that was stored in Samos' hut in Dead Town for years. After receiving the seed, Samos becomes sagely and develops the ability to speak to the plants. At long last, when Kor was finally defeated, the young Samos realized that he had to take young Jak back in time a bit more than two hundred years to look over him, so that Jak could eventually come back to the future and defeat Kor, allowing the time cycle to continue.
In the past, the young Samos became the Green Sage and watched over Jak in Sandover Village. He also fathered his daughter, Keira, although who Keira's mother is is unknown. After many adventures, Jak discovered the Rift Gate that would eventually take him, Daxter, Samos and Keira into the future again, back to Haven City. Upon arriving in the city, he is thrown into prison and eventually meets his younger version. After making sure his younger self becomes sagely, and that he and the Kid travel back in time to Sandover Village, he continues to watch over Jak.
In Jak 3, he is a key member of the Freedom League who is more concerned with the mystery of the Dark Makers and Errol's return than with the war. After meeting the Precursors in person, he is embarrassed to see they are simply Ottsels, and that he spent his entire life searching for them. In , he attends Krew's will-reading and is poisoned. He doesn't actually race himself, letting Jak do the work for him as usual.
He is voiced by Warren Burton. In the Japanese versions of ALL the Jak games, he is voiced by Ichiro Nagai (永井 一郎).
Blue Sage
The Blue Sage (ブルー・セイジィ) is the descendant of the original sage appointed by the Precursors. He is a master of Blue Eco, an electricity like substance that grants speed and conductivity. The Blue Sage was captured by his former friend Gol Acheron and was forced to power Gol's precursor robot. He was rescued by Jak and together with the other sages, created White Eco. The Japanese version is voiced by Hiroshi Iwasaki (岩崎 ひろし).
Red Sage
The Red Sage (レッド・セイジィ) is the descendant of the original sage appointed by the Precursors. He is a master of Red Eco, a red gooey like substance that gives great strength. The Red Sage was captured by Gol Acheron and was forced to power Gol's precursor robot. He was one of the friendlier sages and lived in a volcanic crater. When he was rescued by Jak he mistakenly presumed that Daxter was the one who had rescued him and gave him all the credit. He and the other sages then worked together to create White Eco. The Japanese version is voiced by Mugihito (麦人).
Yellow Sage
The Yellow Sage (イエロー・セイジィ) is the descendant of the original sage appointed by the Precursors. He is a master of Yellow Eco, a bright fiery substance that lets the user shoot boiling hot balls of energy from their hands. The Yellow Sage, like all others before him, was captured by Gol Acheron. He is the grouchiest of the sages and was intent on making a snack of Daxter. On his back he carries a blaster that presumably shoots yellow eco from its barrel. He along with other sages were rescued by Jak and worked together to create White Eco. The Japanese version is voiced by Mahito Tsujimura (辻村 真人).
Brutter
A Lurker who owns a fish stall in the Bazaar in Haven City at the time of Jak II, Brutter (ブラッター) paid Krew to help him free his Lurker brothers from becoming slaves of the Krimzon Guard, although Krew simply got Jak and Daxter to do the hard work. Daxter first met Brutter while clearing out his cannery in the Port, during the time of Daxter. He later befriends Jak, and he later helps Keira, the Kid, the two Samoses, and the Rift Rider to reach the Metal Head Nest by supplying a Lurker balloon. After the defeat of Kor, he is made a captain by Ashelin. According to Naughty Dog in the official Jak 3 guide, Brutter later became a plastic surgeon, specializing in Lurker-human transformations. Brutter is voiced by Alan Blumenfeld in Jak II, and Daxter. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Hiroshi Iwasaki (岩崎 ひろし).
Count Veger
Count Veger(ヴェーガー), first seen in Jak 3, is the Power Broker for the Grand Council of Haven City. At the start of Jak 3, he officially banishes Jak to the Wastleland. When Jak and Daxter arrive back in the city by way of the Precursor subrails, Veger reveals that he was the one who destroyed the Palace, which caused Jak's exile, and attempts to stop them by activating a giant Precursor robot. In the end of Jak 3, he steals away the right of evolving into a Precursor, which was offered to Jak. Seconds later, it was revealed that Precursors are really ottsels, so Veger was ottselized. He is now a companion of Kleiver, who has decided that he wants a sidekick.
Although he does not appear until Jak 3, Veger is arguably the "main villain" of the trilogy as he, alongside Kor, was responsible for most of the events that happened to Jak during his life (separation from his father, exile into the Wasteland, and subsequent torment throughout Jak 3).
Count Veger also appers in Daxter in one scene when he is talking to Erol.
Phil LaMarr is the actor who voices Count Veger (as well as Sig).
Cutter
A real enigma on the Mizo team, this masked driver's origins are unknown. Some say Cutter once lived with the Marauders in the Icy North. Other's say he was born in a mental asylum in Kras City and somehow escaped.Damas
Damas (デーマス) is one of the secondary characters in Jak 3. Damas was once king of Haven City until Baron Praxis usurped the throne and exiled him to the wasteland. To make things worse, Damas' son Mar was taken by Count Veger, a Precursor scientist.
In the wastelands, Damas managed to gather the people surviving out there, and formed a new city, Spargus, in the desert. Damas led Spargus as an independent state, but continued to keep an eye on Haven City through the use of spies. Years of surviving in the desert made him hard, both in temperament, and towards his former home.
Years later, in answer to an old Wastelander distress call, he would come across a young man, alongside an Ottsel and a Moncaw. The Moncaw, Pecker, would quickly talk his way into serving as a mouthpiece for Damas, and the man and his Ottsel, Jak and Daxter, he would test repeatedly by sending them out on various dangerous missions. Over time, Damas began to grow to respect Jak, even when he showed his defiance in refusing to battle Sig to the Death. Eventually, Damas himself would come to Jak's aid in assaulting the Dark Makers attacking the planet, riding to the rescue in his personal buggy, the Slam Dozer/Ram Rod, and accompanying Jak in fighting his way into the enemy citadel.
As they stormed the inner tower, however, a shell fired by the Dark Makers overturned the Ram Rod, crushing Damas under it's weight. His last request was for Jak to find his son, Mar. Damas died never knowing that Jak was Mar, having been sent back in time so that he would be old enough to fight the Metal Head Leader and the Dark Makers when they came.
Many people on the net theorize that Damas and Baron Praxis are brothers. This has not been proven, though it does appear that they are related in some way (although some could argue that Praxis and Damas were good friends, and when Praxis became jealous of Damas' power, Praxis then banished Damas to the wasteland).
In Jak 3 Damas is voiced by Bumper Robinson.
Errol
-->Errol (エロール), featured in Jak II, 3 and Daxter, was the commander of the Krimzon Guard in Jak II. He resented Jak because of his Dark Eco monstrosity (even though he created it for Praxis) which he thought should be destroyed. Hot-headed and proud, Erol was ready to go into even the fiercest of battles. He is an excellent hover-bike racer, nearly beating Jak on several occasions. He is clearly attracted to Keira, further fueling the rivalry between Jak and himself. In the Class 1 racing championship, he crashed into barrels of Eco, seemingly killing him.
In Jak 3, he returns in a cyborg form due to the accident from the last game. However, his status has risen from rival to pure villain, and he is now depicted as even more psychotic and mentally disturbed than before. In this game he is responsible for the KG Death-bots plaguing Haven City and is working with the Dark Makers to destroy the world. He is truly destroyed at the end of Jak 3 when a Peace Maker sphere from Jak's Morph Gun hits the back of the Dark Maker Terraformer head where Errol was (it was his cockpit), destroying the Terraformer and at the same time, his mechanical body. This time around, he shows no interest in Keira, devoting himself entirely to the world's destruction.
Interestingly, Errol's name was spelt "Erol" in Jak II, and changed to "Errol" in Jak 3. Since "Errol" came last, it's safe to assume that spelling that is the canon version, and that the original spelling was a mistake. Why the name was changed is not clear. However, the spelling "Erol" appeared again in the Ready at Dawn spin off Daxter. Some believe that Erol is the human and Errol is the cyborg. Some also believe that Errol will return in a future Jak game as a completely destroyed, fake body.
Errol has apparently met Daxter prior to Jak II, though Daxter was in a Hazmat suit when he met him.
Errol was voiced by David Herman. In the Japanese version, he was voiced by Daisuke Kishio (岸尾 大輔).
Dark Makers
The Dark Makers (ダーク・メーカーズ) are a mysterious alien race, bent on the destruction of the planet. Their technology is impressive, being able to build huge machines such as the Terraformer and the Dark Maker Ship (called the "Day Star" by Seem). They have an unknown link to the Metal Heads, and, according to Ottsel Leader, the Dark Makers were once Precursors, but they were tainted by Dark Eco and became twisted and evil. Cyber Errol, resurrected as a KG robot after his "death" at the hands of Jak, struck a deal with them, since he was also obsessed with the idea of destroying the world. Errol and his Terraformer were destroyed by Jak, but the Dark Makers live on, and continue to wage war against the Precursors.
Some fans have proposed a theory of a connection between the Dark Makers and the Metal Heads. It is possible that the Metal Heads were some sort of techno-organic bioweapon created by the Dark Makers in order to wage war against the Precursors long ago.
Edje
This swift racer knows speed, and how to push it to the edge and beyond limits. Known for his power driving and love of blue turbo. Edje is a hard target to hit because he is so fast.Marauders
The Marauders (マラーダーズ) are a race of nomads that have even been banished from Spargus, itself a home for rejects. Residing in a fortress to the south of the Wasteland, they frequently cause trouble for the citizens of Spargus, attacking its gates and vehicles with their own machines. They have adapted to the harsh desert climate surprisingly well, but they are a wild people who will attack anyone without prejudice. Marauders also appear to live in the frozen Icelands, although these are most likely not from Spargus.
G. T. Blitz
G.T. Blitz (G.T.・ブリッツ) is Kras City's racing commentator. His father was once one of the greatest racers on the planet, until he was killed during a race.
Throughout the game, Blitz reports on the racing events and gives Jak the odd hint about the sport. Partway through the game, Blitz gains a co-anchor, Pecker, who greatly annoys him, especially when the monkaw begins to relate to the viewers about Mizo's involvement in the sport.
At the end, it transpires that Mizo is in fact Blitz in disguise and he races Jak through Kras City. But after Jak defeats him, Mizo is killed in a huge explosion.
He is voiced by Phil LaMarr.
Gol Acheron
Gol Acheron (ゴル・アシェロン) has vast knowledge of the substance Dark Eco such that he knows how to reverse its destructive nature. This knowledge makes him the only person who has the power to change Daxter back from an ottsel.
Unfortunately, he and his sister Maia Acheron were transformed and driven insane by the Dark Eco. Having become the antagonists, they created a Lurker army to gather precursor artifacts to modify them. Their goal is to unleash the Dark Eco in the silo near their citadel using a giant Precursor Robot to open it and release the Dark Eco into the world so they can mold it to their liking. In order to save the world, Jak has to destroy them by any means necessary, meaning Daxter will be stuck as an ottsel.
It is believed that Gol was killed after falling into the Dark Eco silo, but some fans of the series find that doubtful because he and his sister Maia know how to control Dark Eco, and Samos told Jak and the others that they might see them again.
Gol is voiced by Dee Snider. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Masaaki Tsukada (塚田 正昭).
Keira Hagai
Keira (ケイラ・ハガイ) is very good at mechanics and was originally Jak's love interest in the first two games. In the first game, she is the sassy and smart daughter of Samos Hagai, the Green Sage. In Jak II she is a racing mechanic at the Mar Memorial Stadium. Hidden behind a curtain, Jak and Daxter are not aware that Krew's racing client is their good friend Keira. After they finally reunite, she is initially put off by the drastic change in Jak's personality since she last saw him, causing tension between the two. However, by the game's end, they are back together, she apparently having come to terms with his changes. Her role in Jak 3 is much smaller, being only in a few scenes. Plus, her role as Jak's love interest is replaced by Ashelin, causing much controversy among gaming fans. However, at the end of the fourth game, Jak X, she reasserts her position as Jak's girlfriend. In the end scene, as she and Jak go to kiss each other, Daxter interrupts with the traditional "Hey!" that he has used to interrupt their kiss at the end of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Jak II. However, when they glare at him, he says, "Will you kiss her already?". And then they proceed to do exactly that in what Daxter calls "a photo finish".
Keira is credited with creating the Zoomer from her earlier creation of the A-GraV zoomer.
In the first two games, she was voiced by Anna Garduño, but in Jak 3 and Jak X: Combat Racing, she is voiced by Tara Strong. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by notable seiyu Kyoko Hikami (氷上 恭子).
Klaww
Klaww (クロー) was a huge Lurker that was sent by Gol and Maia to attack Rock Village, and prevent anyone from getting through the Mountain Pass. He had the ability to create and throw 30 ton flaming boulders, which he used to attack the village. He easily beat the local Warrior, resulting in the Warrior's deep melancholy. He was only seen in , where he was defeated by Jak. Even if he managed to survive the battle, which is unlikely, that event took place around 304 years ago, so he would be long dead by now.
Kleiver
Kleiver (クリーヴァー) used to work for Krew, although he ended up in the Wasteland through unknown means. He unofficially became Damas' right-hand-man, looking after Spargus City's garage and the range of vehicles in it. He is a skilled racer, and it pains him to give up one of his vehicles to someone else. His personal favourite vehicle is the Dune Hopper. When he first met Jak and Daxter in Jak 3, he disliked them, and considered Daxter as a potential meal, but he came to like them as he appreciated their racing talent. When Veger was made into an Ottsel, Kleiver forcefully made him his sidekick. Later, in , Kleiver arrives in Kras City, sans Veger, to get another chance to beat Jak on the circuit, but he is once again defeated.
Kor
-->Kor (コール), also known as Metal Kor (メタルコール), was the Metal Head leader for eons. Unlike most Metal Heads, he was capable of transformations and human speech. Many eons ago, he led the Metal Heads in a war against the Precursors, seemingly destroying them and their civilisation. The Metal Heads then disappeared, only reappearing through the Rift Gate opened by Jak at the beginning of Jak II. They then destroyed much of the "old world", and the legendary hero Mar created Haven City to protect people and, more importantly, the Precursor Stone, from Kor. Obsessed with the Precursor Stone, calling it the "last Precursor egg", he posed as an old man and joined the Underground, looking after the Kid, who was later revealed to be a younger version of Jak. His sidekick Kaeden also posed as a human, aiming to destroy Osmo's exterminator business while Kor focused on getting the Precursor stone. Baron Praxis aimed to stay in office by bribing Kor with eco, but Kor's secret deal with Krew allowed him to get through the city shield and kill Praxis. He was later killed at the Nest by Jak, when he attempted to escape through the Rift Gate, which severed his head. His head is currently hanging in the Naughty Ottsel bar.
In the Japanese versions of Jak II and Daxter, he is voiced by Hiroshi Naka (中 博史).
Krew
The extremely obese Krew (クルー) is a major crime lord in Haven City, with all the factions of the Metal Head Wars possessing ties to him. It was revealed he was associated with Baron Praxis and Metal Kor, but later betrayed Praxis. It is unknown as to what exactly the Metal Heads rewarded him for his treachery. He built a piercer bomb so the Baron could open up the precursor stone, but was left to die by Jak when he activated his bomb after a brawl. As for the Metal Head Leader, he used Mar's ruby key to open a door in the underport which opened a flood gate for a bunch of Metal Heads. In Jak X, it is revealed he had left behind a daughter and will; however, the gifts left in the will were poisonous, and the characters from the previous games had to race for the antidote.
Krew's use of antigravity devices to support his weight is reminiscent of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen from the Dune series.
William Minkin is the actor who voices Krew. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Chafurin (茶風林).
Maia Acheron
-->Maia Acheron (マイア・アシェロン) was the sister of Gol, and was also turned insane and her body warped by Dark Eco. She shared her brother's desire to flood the world with Dark Eco and rebuild it to their liking, and the two of them recruited the Lurkers to help them scavenge the parts to a Precursor Robot; the only thing capable of opening the Dark Eco silos. She and Gol, inside the robot, were defeated by Jak when he channeled a beam of Light Eco at them, and their cockpit sunk into the silo. While they are presumed dead, Samos believes they may still be alive, and there are apparently rumours of them still living in the catacombs. Maia only appeared in .
Maia was voiced by Jennifer Hagood. In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Yoko Somi (沢海 陽子).
Mar
In their adventure in Jak II, Jak and Daxter could not hear enough about Mar (マール) and how wonderful he was. The founder of Haven City and legendary hero, a statue of him resided in Haven's sewers, before it was blown up by Krew's boys to get a jewel lodged in the face. This jewel was called The Heart Of Mar and was required for the Rift Rider.
In Jak 3, Jak finds out his real name is Mar, leading people to believe that Jak might be the Mar. Although Ashelin's question "Jak is Mar? THE Mar?" and Seem's responding nod seem to suggest this, it has been debated whether or not Jak is the famous, legendary Mar. Those against argue that the Rift Gate used for time travel lacks the ability to do much except send people to one of two points in time, Haven City and Sandover Village. Those for it argue that there were other rift gates (as evidenced by Kor's statement, "The LAST Rift Gate has been opened!"), and that one could have taken Jak into the past to build Haven City. People disagree as this would cause a strange paradox, with Jak being both ancestor and descendant to himself, although this would not be the first such paradox to occur. A simple theory is that Jak was merely named after his ancestor, the Mar of Haven City.
Metal Heads
Very little is known of the Metal Heads (メタルヘッド), their origins, or their society. What is know is that, millennia before the games, they waged a destructive war with the Precursors (who called them the Hora-Quan, presumably their native name). Driven by Metal Kor, the Metal Head Leader, they destroyed the Precursor Civilization. They invaded Jak and Daxter's world when Jak, Daxter, Keira, and Samos the Sage opened a Rift Gate that launched them into the future at the beginning of Jak II. Eventually they overran the world so effectively that only a few cities exist by Jak II. The Metal Heads established a huge nest within sight of Haven City, hoping to seize the city and gain the Precursor Stone, which is actually the last Precursor Egg (though revelations in Jak 3 seem to negate this). Kor managed to infiltrate the City to disrupt it. By making a deal with Krew, a local crime boss, the Metal Heads gained access to the city through the underport. Eventually, Kor reveals himself to Jak and Daxter, who travel to the Nest, with the Precursor stone and, in a final confrontation, killed Metal Kor, severing his gigantic head and putting it up as a trophy in the Naughty Ottsel, Krew's former bar.
By Jak 3, the Metal Heads have managed to reorganize under their strongest members, even gaining a foothold in Western Haven City and building a gigantic hive tower. Jak 3 also seems to hint at some sort of past relationship between the Metal Heads and the Dark Makers, but this has not been elaborated on, and it is not said how Jak, the person who first stated this, found out. The Tower was destroyed in a mission.
The Metal Heads had a very little appearance in Jak X, seen in a single event, and the words "Metal Head" are never actually said. They are most likely regrouping once again.
The Metal Heads are seen in the Daxter PSP game, during their initial invasion of Haven City.
The Metal Heads seem to have maintained an endless war with the people of Jak's planet, having destroyed an unknown number of cities and evidently eating the inhabitants. The cities of Haven, Spargus, and Kras are the only known cities that weren't destroyed, and the Metal Heads see Haven as the main target.
Metal Heads are very diverse in size and physiology. Many of them appear insectoid, while others seem more reptilian (there are even aquatic Metal Heads). Metal Heads have two or four eyes. They seem to be techno-organic, as many are equipped with lasers, jets, energy shields, rockets, and cloaking devices. All Metal Heads have what is called a Skullgem in their foreheads or chest, presumably the source of their name. In Jak II, the skull gems were needed for Jak to gain new Dark Eco abilities from the Oracle. The insectoid appearance of many Metal Heads, as well as the use of the terms Hive and Nest, leads many fans to believe that the Metal Heads possess some sort of Hive mind or collective conscious (though this is not confirmed in the games). They reproduce by laying eggs, which are grayish in color and have a yellow skull gem in the middle. The eggs can be found stuck to cave or steel walls with some kind of webbing. Also, if the eggs are in pools of dark eco, they will grow stalks. Metal Heads seem to feast on both Dark Eco, a powerful form of energy in the series, as well as the flesh of whatever they can find. This desire for Eco and Meat could be a reason for the Metal Head Leader's obsession with the Precursor Stone.
Mizo
Mizo (ミゾ) does not appear until near the end of Jak X. All that is established about his character before is that he is a major crimelord and a rival of the deceased Krew.
In the Kras City tournament, Mizo hires top racers Edje, Cutter and Shiv to work for him, as Mizo's henchman Razer says, "Eventually everyone does.".
In the final tournament, Mizo reveals himself to be none other than race commentator G.T. Blitz and steals the poison antidote from the gang. Jak hunts him down and Mizo is killed in a large explosion.
He is voiced by Phil LaMarr.
Onin
Onin (オニン) is a wise old soothsayer who, at the time of Jak II, lived in a tent in the Bazaar in Haven City. She is blind and doesn't speak, but she communicates through hand movements which are interpreted by her Monkaw, Pecker. She can also create small magic spells. Even while Jak was imprisoned in the Fortress as part of the Dark Warrior project, Onin saw that Jak was somehow "special". She knows much about the world, and is the only one able to sense Kor's true identity as the Metal Head leader. She likes a drink, and can get very cruel while drunk. During the time of Jak 3, Onin moved her hut to the Slums and joined the Freedom League, where her wisdom once again served Jak well.
Strangely enough, though she plays a rather large supporting role, Onin has no voice actors in any version.
Ottsels
An Ottsel (オツェル) is a fictional hybrid of a weasel and an otter. Ottsels stand between two and three feet high, and are most commonly orange and yellow colored. Daxter is the best example of an ottsel.
As a running joke, Ottsels, though rarely seen, are often the butts of jokes, including the idea of creating coats or foods out of them.
In a surprise twist near the end of Jak 3, Ottsels turn out to be the fabled Precursors in the Jak and Daxter mythology. So it was seen as a blessing that Daxter became an Ottsel and others accidentally followed suit. Tess and Veger become Ottsels near the end of the game; Tess due to wishing she had the same pants as Daxter, and Veger when he wished to become a Precursor, not yet knowing that they were Ottsels.
Ottsel Dummy
Ottsel Dummy (オツェル・ダミー) is one of three Precursors, which are revealed to be Ottsels, seen in Jak 3. He is the least intelligent of the trio, questioning Ottsel Leader's wisdom and looking very goofy. His real name isn't known, but Naughty Dog calls him "Ottsel Dummy".
Ottsel Leader
Ottsel Leader (オツェル・リーダー) is the leader of the Precursors, which are in actual fact Ottsels. He is the most intelligent and sophisticated out of the three Precursors seen in Jak 3, and it is he who seems to voice the Oracle. He also gave Daxter his pants, and transformed Tess into an Ottsel. His real name is not known, but he is referred to by Naughty Dog as "Ottsel Leader".
Ottsel Surfer
Ottsel Surfer (オツェル・サーファー) is one of the three Precursors, which are actually Ottsels, seen in Jak 3. He appears to be second-in-command, after Ottsel Leader. He talks in a stereotypical "surfer-dude" accent, and his mannerisms are very similar. His real name is never mentioned, but Naughty Dog calls him "Ottsel Surfer".
Pecker
Pecker (ペッカー) is a half-monkey, half-macaw Monkaw who served as a translator for the silent soothsayer Onin. Apparently when Jak first saw him he said that his mother was a very "vindictive" woman. He has little regard for Onin's words, often twisting them to his preference and summing things up in a disrespectful manner. He and Daxter have a rivalry from the very start, often fighting and yelling obscenities at one-another. In Jak II, he is simply Onin's interpreter, but in Jak 3, he joins Jak and Daxter out in the Wasteland and briefly becomes a sidekick to Damas before returning to Onin. In , Pecker becomes a co-presenter on the Kras City Racing Championship with G.T. Blitz, who is annoyed by Pecker's loud-mouthed attitude.
In the PS2 games since Jak II, Pecker is voiced by Chris Cox (who obviously fakes Pecker's accent). In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Wataru Takagi (高木 渉).
Razer
Razer (レーゼル) is a character from . Razer is a retired champion racer, Mizo's most important henchman, and an incredibly tough racer. He loves to taunt Jak about his own racing prowess but is defeated in the Final Championship Race.
Razer's accent is a topic of debate among fans. Individual assertions about its origin include French, German, and Hungarian.
He is voiced by David Herman.
Seem
Seem (シーム) is a Precursor Monk living in the wastelands outside Haven City. She doesn't like outsiders so she is distrustful of Jak and Daxter when they first meet. Seem was preoccupied with the arrival of the Daystar which she thought would cause the end of the world. Seem also was very knowledgeable in the ways of the Precursors and even knew what they really looked like. Seem originally thought that Jak would make things worse by trying to stop the Metal Heads and Dark Makers, but eventually realized he might actually be able to save them.
She was originally scripted to die in the siege of the Precursor Mountain Temple by the Dark Makers, but her death was cut from the final version of the game.
Note: Seem's gender has been debated by fans of the series. In the game, the question of whether Seem is male or female is never entirely settled (Daxter twice calls her "Monk Boy"). However, character development sketches on Jak and Daxter artist Bob Rafei's website depict Seem clearly (anatomically) as female, and in the commentary for the cutscenes, she is referred to with female pronouns.
She is voiced by Tara Strong.
Shiv
Born on the streets of Spargus, this former Wastelander is now a thug in Mizo's gang, and one of the toughest combat racers on the track. Shiv earned deep respect and fear with his with his lighting quick moves and surprise kills. He is noticeable because he is heavily tattooed and has no earsSig
Sig (ジーグ) is a wastelander who first appeared in Jak II. Sporting Metal Head armour, a peacemaker gun, and a metal eye, he was Krew's right hand man, occasionally helping Jak in his missions. His last mission for Krew was opening a door in the Underport, unfortunately this was a trap set up by Krew and Metal Kor to infiltrate Haven city. Almost swarmed by Metal Heads he was rescued by Jak but presumably killed by a metal-pede, although it was revealed at the end he had survived.
In Jak 3 however it had turned out he was a spy sent to find Damas' son Mar. He and Jak were sent on suicide missions to toughen them up after Damas decided that Sig had gone soft from years of living in Haven City. He was also sent to Haven for some top gun missions. In the final cutscene of the game, Sig takes Damas' place on the throne of Spargus city.
In Jak X, he joins in on the racing action in an attempt to help Jak win the championship.
He is voiced by Phil LaMarr. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Joji Nakata (中田 譲治).
Tess
Tess (テス) is an Underground supporter, first seen in Jak II. She is very beautiful, and Daxter falls for her immediately. In more of a lighter tone, it seems she loves him as well. She is also very courageous, helping on the front lines in whatever way possible. She works at the Hip Hog as a barmaid, a ruse to gain Krew's secrets.
In Jak 3, Tess works to create new guns for the war effort, notably the Gyro Burster (Yellow Gun 3) and the Plasmite RPG (Red Gun 3). At the end of the game, she is turned into an ottsel and she and Daxter are happy.
Her role is very small in Jak X, appearing only in her ottsel form in a 10 second cutscene that is purchased in the Secrets Shop, an obvious joke to the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas "Hot Coffee" scandal.
In those three games, she is voiced by Britton A. Hill. The Japanese Tess is voiced by notable seiyu Yumi Touma (冬馬由美).
Torn
Torn (トーン) makes his first appearance in Jak II as a senior leader of the Underground rebel group fighting against Baron Praxis. Although he may appear gruff and angry at the start of the game, he becomes more warm to Jak as you help him complete the tasks he gives you. He also has something going on with Ashelin, Baron Praxis' daughter.
In Jak 3 he is the leader of the Freedom League and is the person who first tells Jak about the war. When Jak gets back to Haven City, Torn has taken over the Naughty Ottsel in the port. Torn reveals that he was sent on a suicide mission into the port and has been cut off. He is much warmer to you in Jak 3 than in Jak II.
In , Torn is still with you and he is just as steely as ever. But in this story-line he works more closely with Jak as more of an appreciative peer who respects his abilities.
The actor who voices Torn in Jak II, Jak 3, and Jak X: Combat Racing is Cutter Mitchell (Who also voices Jinx in Jak II and Jak 3.). In the Japanese versions of these games, he is voiced by Rikiya Koyama (小山 力也).
UR-86
With steely nerves and lighting quick reactions, UR-86 is the deadliest driver on the circuit. A former Krimzon DeathBot, this bad-to-the-bolts racer holds the record for most kills in a single raceVin
Vin(ビン) is the bumbling, mumbling, jittery chief engineer of Haven City, and charged with keeping the Eco Grids online, which keeps the Metal Heads out of the city. Because of the stress of his job, he has a jumpy and paranoid nature, which Daxter often uses to add to the comedy of the story. Jak first meets him when Torn tells him to save Vin at the Strip Mine. Vin is supposedly killed by Metal Heads when Kor deactivates Haven City's shield walls (allowing a Metal Head invasion). In Jak 3, it is discovered that Vin dumped his brain into the city's Eco Grid before being killed by the Metal Heads, thus giving him immortality as a virtual being. As being confined to the lab walls, he does not make an appearance in Jak X.
Vin helps Jak in Jak 3 by sending Daxter into a game to collect a cypher to unlock the war factory doors.
The voice actor for Vin is Robert Patrick Benedict. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Hiroshi Yanaka (家中 宏).
Ximon
Ximon (シモン) is Osmo's son, and another pest exterminator. He has a generic surfer accent, often saying words such as "dude", and he is extremely laid-back. He has a Scooter, which he lent to Daxter during Daxter, and he also flies his own hover vehicle. Osmo appears to disrespect Ximon, although Ximon is very loyal to his job as an exterminator and also to Daxter, helping him to track down Jak.
