1-Up Heart
When Mario grabs a 1-Up Heart, he will earn an extra life. Found in Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2.
1-Up Mushroom
This item is found in most Mario games in the form of an adventure (Super Mario Sunshine, etc.). These would give Mario another life giving him more time before he loses all of his lives and it ends up game over.
1-Up Super
This appears in Mario & Luigi, where it functions like a Super Mushroom.
10 Gold Coin
The 10 Golden Coin is a coin for the Nintendo character Wario found in Super Mario Land 3 and Wario Land 2.
100 Gold Coin
This is also a coin for the character Wario found in Super Mario Land 3.
10 Point Star
This item gives Yoshi 10 more seconds to pick up Baby Mario in Yoshi's Island.
20 Point Star
A 20 Point Star gives Yoshi 20 seconds longer to find Baby Mario.
3-Up Moon
In Super Mario World, this moon gives Mario three extra lives.

Paper Mario
Alto Card
In Super Mario RPG, a card recivied after teaching Toadofsky the first tune. It lets you buy Elixrs at the Juice Bar.
Amulet
In Super Mario RPG, this is won in Booster's Tower
Anchor
In Super Mario Bros. 3, this is found only in White Mushroom Houses. Used on the map screen, to stop the airship from moving around if you die while on it.
Antidote Pin
In Super Mario RPG, this prevents the wearer from being poisoned.
Anuboo Jeans
Sometimes dropped by Anuboos, an enemy in . For Luigi only. Increases Defense rating by 40.
Anywhere POW
In Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island), this is used on the Pause Screen to turn all the enemies on the screen into stars.
Apple
In Paper Mario this restores 5 HP. In Yoshi's Story this is one of five regular fruits in the game. It is Red Yoshi's and Pink Yoshi's favorite fruit.
Apple Pie
In Paper Mario, one of Tayce T.'s recipes. Restores 5 HP and 15 FP.
Axe
In Super Mario Bros., the axe stands at the end of the drawbridge at the end of each fortress level. Touching the axe causes the drawbridge to disappear, making King Koopa fall into the lava underneath.

B

Banana
In the Super Mario Kart series of games, the banana can be dropped onto the track. Racers that drive over a banana spin, causing de-acceleration.
Beanstalk
In the Super Mario Bros. platform games, the beanstalk comes out of some Question Mark Boxes. This allows the player to access new parts of the level high above the ground.
In Super Mario Bros. 2, beanstalks, or "vines" as they are known in the game's documentation, are far more widespread and in fact form an integral part of the normal running of some levels.
Birdo's Egg
At the end of most levels in Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo fires her eggs at the player. The player must catch these in mid-air and throw them back at Birdo to defeat her. Birdo and her eggs also make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee, where they can be picked up and thrown.
Blooper
In the Super Mario Kart series of games, Blooper is an item that causes all racers positioned in front of the user to have their view of the track obscured by Octopus ink.
Blue Shell
Found in New Super Mario Bros. Causes Mario to wear a blue shell in the style of a Koopa. In this form, he can perform a Shell Dash, which causes him to duck into his shell and bounce around like any other koopa shell. Shell Mario is also able to duck into his shell at anytime rendering him invulnerable against most enemies (reminiscent of the Tanooki suit in SMB3). Shell Mario also has greatly facilitated swimming in water levels (similar to the Frog suit in SMB3).
Bomb-Omb: In Mario Kart Double Dash!!, the Bomb-Omb is Wario and Waluigi's special. Later in Mario Kart DS, it was a normal item anyone could use.
Boo
In the Super Mario Kart games, Boo is an item that when used, will attempt to steal an item from another racer. If no items are available for the taking, Boo will return empty-handed. During the stealing process, the racer is rendered invisible to other racers and impervious to damager from projectiles.
Bullet Bill
In the Super Mario Kart series of games, using this item turns a racer into Bullet Bill, who flies on auto-pilot along the course for a short period of time, knocking any other racers it meets out of the way.
Bullet Bill Cannon
Appears in every game Bullet Bill appears in. Shoots Bullet Bills, sometimes in a set direction, sometimes towards Mario.

Carrot
In Super Mario Land 2, gives Mario rabbit ears and the ability to float down rather than falling.

Cherry
In Super Mario Bros. 2, when five cherries are collected a Starman floats across the level.
Crystal Ball
This item is dropped by Boom Boom after his defeat in Super Mario Bros. 3. Collecting this ends the mini fortress levels. In turn this causes the mini fortress to collapse, and quite often causes a locked door on the map to disappear. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo carries an unrelated crystal ball that she drops after she is defeated. This crystal ball causes the bird's mouth exit to the level to open.

Fire flower
Fire Flower
Transforms Mario into Firey Mario. He can throw fireballs at enemies, but some foes are not affected by the fire power, such as the Buzzy Beetle.
Feather
Transforms Mario to Caped Mario, allowing him to fly. This items appear in Super Mario World, Mario All-Stars+Super Mario World, Super Mario Advance 2 and Super Mario Advance 4 Super Mario Bros 3, that can be unlocked by a Card e-Reader.
Flagpole
At the end of the first two levels of each zone in Super Mario Bros., the player jumps onto a flagpole to lower the Koopa flag. Jumping higher up onto the flagpole earns the player more points.
Frog Suit
Transforms Mario into Frog Mario, who is more agile in the water. While in the water the Player can use the directional pad to control the direction in which Mario swims. On land, Frog Mario is very slow, although he can jump higher than regular Mario. Found in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Golden Mushroom
In the Super Mario Kart games, the golden mushroom is an item that, for a brief period of time depending on the item rating of the kart, gives the user an infinite number of speed boosts.
Green Shell
In the Super Mario Kart series of games, a green Koopa shell is a projectile that the player can fire at other racers. The shell travels in straight lines, rebounding off of walls and fennces. Racers hit by a green shell will spin, causing brief de-acceleration.

Hammer
The hammer is an item used on the map screen in Super Mario Bros. 3 to clear a piece of rock from a path. This can be to either reach a place that is in view, or to access a new, hidden part of the map.
Hammer Suit
The hammer suit in Super Mario Bros. 3 is used to transform Mario into Hammer Mario. Hammer Mario is able to throw hammers in a long arc to eliminate foes.

Jugem's Cloud
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Jugem's Cloud is an item that can be used on the map screen to skip a level. It is obtained either by defeating the Hammer Brothers or in letters from Princess Toadstool at the end of each world.

Kuribo's Shoe
In Super Mario Bros. 3, Goomba's shoe can be found being worn by a few Goombas. After removing the Goomba by jumping on its head, the player can use the shoe. As well as offering a boost to jumping, the shoe adds an extra layer of protection to Mario and allows spikes and snapping plants to be negotiated.

Leaf
In Super Mario Bros. 3, gives Mario a racoon tail and ears, letting him fly, float to the ground, and hit objects and enemies to his side.
Lightning
In the Super Mario Kart games, lightning causes all racers in front of the racer who launches it to become a fraction of their former sizes. During this time speed is reduced. Sizes are restored after a brief time, with the leading racer taking the longest to recover.
Luigi's Cap
In Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi's cap causes the wearer to change into a likeness of Luigi. Luigi's appearance and skills are assumed, although the original voice of the wearer remains.

In Super Mario 64 DS, Mario's cap causes the wearer to change into a likeness of Mario. Mario's appearance and skills are assumed, although the original voice of the wearer remains.
Music Box
In Super Mario Bros. 3, the Music Box causes all Hammer Brothers on the map screen to go to sleep for a period of time. During this time when the player moves across a space occupied by the Hammer Brothers, the player won't automatically have to face the Hammer Brothers.
Magic Wand
A magic wand is dropped by each of the Koopa Kids upon their defeat in Super Mario Bros. 3. This wand brings about the end of the airship level at the end of each of the first seven worlds, and allows Mario to return each of the seven kings from their animal forms to their normal selves.
Mega Mushroom
In Super Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros., this rare, enormous Mushroom made the character temporarily grow to giant size. In New Super Mario Bros., Mega Mario and Luigi were invincible and could destroy anything in their path--even warp pipes and platforms. A meter indicating the damage level would fill according to how much was destroyed, and 1-ups were awarded based on how much damage was done. Mega Mario/Luigi always reverts back to Super Mario/Luigi, regardless of what state they were prior to using the Mega Mushroom.
Mini Mushroom
In New Super Mario Bros., this tiny blue mushroom shrinks Mario to approximately 1/8th the size of "small" Mario. In this state, Mario is so light that he can jump higher and even float; he can also fit through tiny gaps or pipes that would be otherwise impossible to enter as normal Mario. He also has the ability to run on water. However, this unique power-up comes at a price

The form of item used in Mario Party 6. Orbs may contain items that will either help you or make it harder for you.

P

Poison Mushroom
In , the Poison Mushroom, which can be distinguished from the Super Mushroom by its brown colour (purple in the All-Stars version, has the same effect as being touched by an enemy. In the Mario Kart series, contact with a Poison Mushroom causes a racer to shrink in size, reducing speed and mass. They are Peach's CPU item.
Potion
In Super Mario Bros. 2, potions can be pulled from the ground and then thrown, creating a doorway to subspace. Depending on where the potion is thrown, mushrooms, cherries and even Warp Zones can be found in subspace.
POW blocks
Used to stun enemies. The block is activated by hitting it from below. The block shrinks with each hit, until the block is gone. POW blocks originated in Mario Bros..
P-Wing
Gives Mario or Luigi a raccoon suit as well as a full P-meter for a full level or until hit by an enemy or killed. This appears in Super Mario Bros. 3 and is only available from white mushroom houses and letters from Princess Toadstool at the end of each world.

Red Shell
In the Super Mario Kart series of games, the red shell is a projectile that when fired, will attempt to home-in on the kart in front of the user. Obstacles such as bananas can stop the shell from reaching its target.
Rocket
In Super Mario Bros. 2, rockets can be pulled from the ground. These are used to progress in a level when the next part of it is high above the ground.

S

Spiked shell
This shell is blue in appearance and in the Super Mario Kart games, the shell homes-in on the racer who is in the lead at the time of its launch. This shell is almost impossible to evade.
Starman
Grants the player a brief time of invincibility. During this time the player is impervious to attacks from enemies but can still succumb to other hazards such as lava and pits.
Stopwatch
In Super Mario Bros. 2, the stopwatch is used to freeze all enemy characters on the screen for a short time. It is obtained when every fifth large vegetable is pulled from the ground.

Tanooki Suit
The Tanooki Suit is introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. This bear-like suit gave Mario the same ability to fly and use a tail attack as did the racoon leaf. The added bonus of the Tanooki Suit is that Mario could also temporarily transform into a statue that was impervious to harm from enemies.
Turtle Shell
An item that can be pulled from the ground in Super Mario Bros. 2. When thrown, the shell slides along the ground, eliminating any enemy characters in its path.

In Super Mario Bros. 2, vegetables are pulled from the ground and are the primary weapon for dispatching of enemies. Vegetables come in two varieties

Wario's Cap

Warp Whistle
In Super Mario Bros. 3, there are three warp whistles that when used on the map screen, transport Mario to the warp zone. From here, Mario is offered a selection of levels to enter, to advance through the game in a quicker fashion.
Wing Cap
Featured in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS. Allows Mario (or another character, in the case of Super Mario 64 DS) to take to the skies and fly. It wore off after a while, and was found in red boxes.
