List of United States cities by population
Encyclopedia : L : LI : LIS : List of United States cities by population
This is a
list of the 100 largest incorporated cities in the United States (including
Puerto Rico), based on the
United States Census Bureau's 2005 population estimates.
[[Census Bureau Estimates Program] (2005)] These figures are lower than the populations of
metropolitan areas, the primary meaning of "city" in many parts of the world. In some cases two or more of the cities listed are in the same metropolitan area.

Largest cities
The United States has dozens of major cities, including 11 of the 55
global cities of all types—with three "alpha" global cities:
New York City,
Los Angeles, and
Chicago.
The figures expressed below are for populations within city limits. A different ranking is evident when considering
U.S. metro area populations, although the top three would be unchanged. The ten largest cities, based on the
United States Census Bureau's 2005 estimates, are as follows:

* Indianapolis,
Louisville, and
Nashville are
consolidated city-counties; the population given is for the entire city including other
incorporated places lying within the city limits.
** Hawaii has no incorporated municipalities other than the City & County of Honolulu, which actually includes the entire island of Oahu. In agreement with Hawaiian Law, the U.S. Census Bureau defines the state's "cities" and "towns" as Census Designated Places (CDPs). The Census defines Honolulu CDP as the portion of the City and County that is coextensive with the Judicial District of Honolulu. Honolulu CDP is what is generally thought of as the "city" of Honolulu, and its population is used here and in other population comparisons.
*** 2005 Population estimates are not yet available for San Juan and Bayamón, Puerto Rico.
