| Addison County | For the first European settlement in Vermont, near present-day West Addison. |
| Bennington County | For the city of Bennington, which was named for Benning Wentworth, governor of the New Hampshire Grants. |
| Caledonia County | For Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland. |
| Chittenden County | For Thomas Chittenden. |
| Franklin County | For Benjamin Franklin. |
| Grand Isle County | For the islands of Lake Champlain, which was named for the French explorer Samuel de Champlain. |
| Lamoille County | Either for a misspelling of Champlain's intended name of Lake Champlain, or for the Old French la Moelle ("the marrow"). |
| Orange County | For William of Orange, later William III of England. |
| Orleans County | For the House of Orleans. |
