County name Namesake/meaning
Addison County For the first European settlement in Vermont, near present-day West Addison.
Bennington County For the city of Bennington, which was named for Benning Wentworth, governor of the New Hampshire Grants.
Caledonia County For Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland.
Chittenden County For Thomas Chittenden.
Franklin County For Benjamin Franklin.
Grand Isle County For the islands of Lake Champlain, which was named for the French explorer Samuel de Champlain.
Lamoille County Either for a misspelling of Champlain's intended name of Lake Champlain, or for the Old French la Moelle ("the marrow").
Orange County For William of Orange, later William III of England.
Orleans County For the House of Orleans.
Rutland County For Rutland, Vermont.
Washington County For George Washington.
Windham County For Windham, Connecticut.
Windsor County For Windsor, Vermont (which was in turn named after Windsor, Connecticut.)
