List of characters in the Star Fox series
Encyclopedia : L : LI : LIS : List of characters in the Star Fox series
This is a list of characters from the Star Fox series of video games.
Algy
Algy was the fourth member of the Star Wolf team in Star Fox 2 and would only appear on Hard or Expert Mode, attacking the player after Leon & Pigma had been defeated. He appeared to be a lemur of some kind.Did not appear in Star Fox 64 or any subsequent games, as he was replaced by Andrew Oikonny, but a similar looking character has shown up in Star Fox Command. Whether or not this is Algy is unknown.
Andrew Oikonny
Andrew Oikonny is the evil nephew of Andross, the main villain of the Star Fox series. Andrew's surname may be a pun on the word "oink"; in the comic, his uncle Andross had several connections with pigs (his foster parents were pigs, and Andross himself later constructed an android pig named Herbert). Andross may have adopted the name "Oikonny" out of respect for his family; this information is not necessarily canon, since neither Andrew's nor Andross's pasts are explored in-depth in any Star Fox storyline. In the Japanese version of Star Fox 64, he is voiced by Daisuke Sakaguchi, who also provides the voices of ROB/NUS 64, and Bill Grey. Incidentally, his Japanese voice actor shares the same surname as Daisuke Gōri, who voices his uncle Andross. In the Japanese version of , he is voiced by Yusuke Numata.
During the time of the Lylat Wars, he flew for Star Wolf, a group of mercenaries hired by Andross to destroy the Star Fox team. Andrew was easily the worst and most inexperienced of the Star Wolf members. It has been theorized that the only reason Andrew is on the team is that Andross favors him as perhaps his last relative. He targeted Slippy Toad during the combats. Eventually, Star Wolf failed to defeat Star Fox. After Andross was killed, Andrew left Star Wolf to avenge his death.
Nine years later, Andrew formed a powerful rebellion with Andross's remaining troops against the Cornerian Army. Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team tracked him down to the planet Fortuna, where he was shot down by an .
Andrew Oikonny is confirmed to be in Star Fox Command as seen in a screenshot from Famitsu magazine . His role as of yet is unknown.
Aparoid Queen
The Aparoid Queen, living upon the Aparoid Homeworld, was the leader of the Aparoid race, and was presumably the first member of the species. From within the Homeworld, the Queen ruled over the Aparoids like a queen bee over her hive; Beltino Toad determined that if the Queen could be infected with a self-destruct program, then the rest of the Aparoids would die along with her.The Queen resided in a protective chamber deep within the core of the Homeworld. When confronted by Star Fox, the Queen tried to intimidate the team members via psychological warfare, speaking in the voices of people whom the Aparoids had contact with, including Pigma Dengar, General Pepper, Peppy Hare, ROB 64, and James McCloud (however, since James was already dead, the Queen probably constructed his personality from the memories of others she had assimilated). The ruse failed, and Fox infected the Queen with the self-destruct program. The program was initially ineffective, and the Queen fled into the heart of the planet in an attempt to develop an immunity. Star Fox gave chase, weakening the Queen's defenses, which allowed the program to work. After the Queen's death, the program spread throughout the Homeworld, destroying it and all the remaining Aparoids.
Beltino Toad
Beltino Toad is the Research Director for the Cornerian Defense Forces and is also Slippy Toad's father. In the Japanese version of Assault, he is voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa, and his English voice actor is Scott Burns.
Beltino previously (and may still) worked for Space Dynamics Co. Ltd. as an engineer, and may have been the designer of the Arwing. He and his son also created the Blue Marine vehicle that Star Fox used in Star Fox 64 to explore the planet of Aquas.
Beltino was first mentioned in the Star Fox 64 Player's Guide, but did not make an in-game appearance until Star Fox: Assault.
In Star Fox: Assault, it was Beltino who discovered two things that led to the destruction of the Aparoids: that they could have programs executed in them and that they were susceptible to apoptosis. He then coded a program that activated the apoptosis gene in the Aparoids. The program was carried by Fox McCloud to the Aparoid Homeworld where it was injected into the Aparoid Queen.
Bill Grey
Bill Grey is featured in Star Fox 64. He is a grey dog who wears a green helmet with a yellow arrow pointing downward. His character was likely derived from Miyu in the cancelled Star Fox 2, who has an arrow on her forehead.
Bill's name is likely a satire of the character General William M. Grey from the movie Independence Day. The entire Katina level is a spoof of the climax to this film.
Bill is an old military academy buddy of Fox McCloud's. After Fox left the academy (rumored because he graduated or because of James McCloud's death), Bill rose through the ranks and was elected commander of two of Corneria's defensive military squadrons.
The Star Fox team meets up with him shortly in Star Fox 64, and helps to defeat the enemies trying to destroy the Cornerian base (located on Katina). If the player finishes the stage, then Bill will return to assist the team in the next stage, regardless if the mission was accomplished or failed; if the player completes the mission without shooting down any of the friendly Cornerian fighters (which are similar in color to the camouflaged Venomian fighters), then Bill will comment on Fox's skill as a pilot in a special cutscene.
Bill flies a ship slightly different from the Arwing. Bill's ship, the Greenie 2, is more curved at the end of the cockpit area and is white with green wings. The ship has a high armor, yet with enough shots by Fox, his ship can indeed be destroyed (yet he will still say his programmed lines). While all of Bill's teammates can only shoot one laser, he has the twin laser upgrade. At the end of the game the Star Fox team returns from Venom to Corneria. Upon the arrival of Corneria, these ships are seen flying in formation in front of the Great Fox with aerobatic smoke trailing behind them.
Caiman
Caiman is a secondary character from Star Fox 64.
Caiman is a Venomian pilot, commanding a large fleet of defense fighters. His only appearance in the game is in Venom's air defense zone, also known as Area 6 during which he is heard speaking to an unnamed superior officer. He only appears in Star Fox 64. His name is likely a play on caiman, a reptile that's a close relative to the alligator.
Fara Phoenix
Fara Phoenix is from the early stories of the Star Fox series. She does not appear in any of the published games, and was removed from the story altogether when it was revised for Star Fox 64.
Comics
Fara is an anthropomorphic fennec, and it is believed her surname is pronounced "fennecs," though this isn't stated in the comic itself. She appears in a series of comics that was published in Nintendo Power magazine from February to December of 1993.She is a Cornerian chief test pilot who introduces the Star Fox team to the Arwing spacecrafts. Fara also catches Fox McCloud's eye, and the two frequently tease each other in an ambiguously portrayed relationship.
During the course of the story, Fara provides crucial support for the Star Fox team, and also flies with them on some of their missions. Later, it is revealed that Fara closely resembles Fox's deceased mother, Vixy Reinard.
Star Fox 2
Fara Phoenix is known to have appeared in the early alpha versions of Star Fox 2, but is excluded from the final beta versions that appeared before the game was finally cancelled. In Fara's absence were two new female characters, Miyu and Fay, who were themselves dropped with the cancellation of that game.Fara is frequently featured in Star Fox fanfiction; before the introduction of Krystal in Star Fox Adventures, she was the only major female character in the series (with the possible exception of Katt Monroe), and Fox's first potential love interest.
Fay
Fay was a character in the cancelled video game Star Fox 2. She does not appear in any other Star Fox titles.
Little is known about Fay, except that she is a dog. Fay is a white poodle with a big pink bow in her hair. Fay replaced a sheep character (gender unknown) from the game's early development. Even earlier in development, Fara Phoenix from the Star Fox comic (called "Lady" in the alpha) and the Andross look-alike "Saru" were in place of Miyu and Fay.
Fay's Arwing
Fay has an Arwing with red wings that is armed with quick-charging twin lasers and super shields.General Scales
General Scales is from the 2002 Nintendo GameCube game Star Fox Adventures. Aside from Andross, he is the main villain in the game. He was voiced by John Silke.
Scales' army is the SharpClaw, who carry out his orders. The SharpClaw originally wanted to be the ruling tribe of Sauria (Dinosaur Planet), but were rejected and amassed an army under Scales to overpower the other tribes.
Scales, looking for an easy way to take over Sauria, removed the four Spellstones that kept the planet together, causing chunks of it to break off. Scales then proceeded to take over each of the four pieces that broke off the planet. He enslaved the Snowhorn Tribe on Darkice Mines, revived the evil Redeye tribe on Walled City, began to produce dinosaur mutants on Dragon Rock, and made CloudRunner Fortress his personal stronghold and the only location he and Fox McCloud meet before their final confrontation in the Krazoa Palace.
It is revealed later that Scales carries the last of the Krazoa spirits that Fox was looking for. When Fox was prepared to fight Scales, Andross revealed himself and forced Scales to give the spirit to Fox so he could be revived, stating that Scales was merely just a puppet figure for him. It is unclear whether or not Scales was killed while transferring the spirit to Fox, as a Life-Force Door opened when Scales released the spirit and a SharpClaw soldier was later seen holding up Scales' belt; if he is indeed alive, his whereabouts are unknown.
James McCloud
James McCloud is the father of Fox McCloud and the founder of the Star Fox team. He was betrayed by Pigma Dengar and captured and thought to be killed by the evil Andross. Peppy Hare informed James's son about his fate; however, it is debatable whether or not James is truly dead.
He was mentioned twice in the original Star Fox, although not by name. In the briefing before going into the Black Hole, General Pepper mentions that the Black Hole was where Fox's father disappeared. Andross says that Fox's father was a reckless fighter, but this dialogue appears only on the highest difficulty level.
Until Star Fox 64, Fox McCloud's father was not called "James." Some references, such as the comic adaptation published in Nintendo Power, called him "Fox McCloud, Sr."
James makes minor appearances in subsequent games. In Star Fox Adventures, four of the Cheat Tokens present messages to Fox, and at least one of them are words of encouragement directly from James himself. Whether or not he wrote the other messages is unknown, but they do relate to personal subjects to Fox, like Andross and saying goodbye to close friends. James also "appears" in . Towards the end, he and some other characters are heard talking, their faces identified in the Comm, thought to be assimilated by the Aparoids. In reality, it's just the Aparoid Queen using the voices to trick Fox.
The unreleased Star Fox 2 is the only Star Fox game not to ever mention James at all.
At the end of Star Fox 64 (depending on if the player fought at Area 6 or Bolse) James helps Fox escape the planet Venom, but then disappears soon afterwards when Fox returns to the Great Fox after the battle with Andross. James is presumed dead, and no one, not even Fox, is quite sure how he guided his son out. Some people think that Fox had some sort of vision of James' "ghost" while others may believe that James might have been able to actually escape Andross. It is also entirely possible that Fox had imagined the whole thing. The exact nature of James' fate is left a complete mystery, but if one watches the closing cutscene closely, a point of light can be seen moving very much against the other background stars, leaving the player to wonder if that was James' Arwing or spirit flying off somewhere.
James is similar in appearance to Fox, but wears sunglasses, and has slightly darker fur. The two also appear to be wearing the same clothes in this game. In Japanese, he is voiced by Tomohisa Aso, who also voices Peppy Hare.
F-Zero character
For more information, see List of F-Zero pilots. There is a character named James McCloud in the F-Zero series of games. While the character is a human, he bears definite resemblance to James and Fox McCloud; he has clothing similar to both Fox and James, has sunglasses similar to James', and his hairstyle comically resembles a pair of fox ears. It also supports identical color: brown with a white streak in the middle.
The F-Zero machine he drives, the Little Wyvern, resembles a wingless Arwing, and in the description was made by a company called Space Dynamics, the same company that made the Arwing. Also, he's a member of mercenary group "Galaxy Dog" (a play on the term Star Fox). The biography also notes he has a young son, and he supports both his wife and son. It's unknown if this character has any connection to the original James. Some fans say it's a disguise for security reasons, but most agree that they're not one and the same, but merely a reference. Also Nintendo Power referred to it as a joke from developers.
Katt Monroe
Katt Monroe is the pink cat players meet in Star Fox 64. Katt is Falco's former girlfriend. The Cornerian Defense Force considers her to be a nuisance, but they do admit that she has been helpful during the fight against Andross.
According to the Star Fox comic, Katt was part of a gang and, by the way it is laid out, most likely the Space Hot Rodders, the same gang that Falco himself was a part of. Katt meets up with the team in Star Fox 64 on the planet Zoness, and helps players destroy a few of the search-lights (and also lend a hand in Macbeth and/or Sector Z later in the game). Katt and Falco continually talk over the transmitter.
In the Star Fox 1997 comic, Katt is bubble-gum pink with a puff of blonde hair on her head. Personality-wise, she is bubbly, a bit ditzy, and obsessed with Falco.
In Star Fox 64, Katt is pink with a dark cream-colored muzzle and a very feminine personality. Katt seems to have a high experience in flying.
Katt makes another appearance in the Star Fox 2002 comic. Her appearance and personality have drastically changed: She is now a light purple color with a white muzzle and a strain of white hair. Now, she is short-tempered, stubborn, reckless, and independent. In this comic, Katt is a gung-ho ground soldier. It is revealed later in the comic that Falco "broke up" with her because he was sick of being her "lovebird". Falco told her she should grow up and get some common sense, and that she can handle things herself. Also, Katt has a new love interest, an unnamed blue cat on her team. She told Falco repeatedly that she had "found someone else." But this is most likely a ploy to make him jealous (which he somewhat was).
Katt's ship is the CatsPaw. The ship is actually one of Venom's Invader-class interceptors, stolen by Katt when she was working solo against them. The craft has an extremely high velocity and a seemingly indestructible shield. The CatsPaw is quadruple winged, and consists of a pink color and a white body. The jet also sparkles as it flies by.
In Japanese, Katt's voice is done by Kyoko Tongu, who also does Slippy Toad's Japanese voice.
Leon Powalski
Leon Powalski is a fictional chameleon from the Star Fox series. He is a member of Star Wolf and has been ever since his first official appearance in Star Fox 64 (he had previously appeared in the cancelled game Star Fox 2).
He seems to have a grudge against Falco Lombardi, although this is never explored in the games. Also, many fans believe that Leon is an expert in torture, though the only thing in-game that suggests this is one of his taunts in Star Fox 64: "I think I'll torture you for a while," as well as his opening line in Star Fox: Assault: "I think I'll torment you a bit before I cook you." Whatever the cause, Leon typically goes after Falco.
While Wolf O'Donnell is labeled the leader of the Star Wolf team in his profile on the Japanese Star Fox: Assault website, Leon is simply labeled as "killer", possibly indicating that he's some kind of assassin.
Wolf O'Donnell and Leon are the only original members of Star Wolf to remain with Star Wolf in Star Fox: Assault; although many can consider Andrew being on their side (despite being on a different faction) and Pigma Dengar being the only kicked-off member.
Leon, along with the rest of the current Star Wolf team, are slated to appear in the upcoming Star Fox Command for the Nintendo DS, though thier role in the game is as yet unknown.
It should be noted that Leon shares a similar name with Leon Kowalski, a Replicant from the film Blade Runner.
Leon is voiced by Shinobu Satouchi in Japanese.
Miyu
Miyu was a member of the Star Fox team who appeared in the unreleased Star Fox 2. Early in the development of Star Fox 2, Miyu and Fay's equivalents were Fara Phoenix of the comics and an Andross look-alike called Saru (meaning "Monkey" in Japanese). It should be noted that while Miyu made her only important appearance in Star Fox 2, a woman that resembles her appears as a semi-hidden picture in the control room of the Great Fox as seen in Star Fox Adventures. Whether or not she is really Miyu is unknown, but it should be noted that the Great Fox had decorations that otherwise reflect the entire Star Fox team. Miyu is a feline with tufts of hair on her ear, leading fans to believe she is supposed to be a lynx.
Miyu's Arwing
Miyu also flew an Arwing like that of Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team. Miyu's ship was a white arwing with blue colored wings. The ships that Fay and Miyu flew in Star Fox 2 were both equipped with twin lasers. The ships were agile but had low shields which meant that they couldn't take much punishment unlike the General-Purpose Type and the Heavy Assault Type, but had some different sort of built-in shield.Panther Caroso
Panther Caroso is a fictional character from Star Fox: Assault. He is the newest member of Star Wolf. His symbol is a red rose; he can be seen either holding one or with one painted under the canopy of his Wolfen fighter, and when he appears for the first time in Star Fox: Assault he says that "All who see my rose meet death!". In the Japanese version of the series he is called Panther Caluroso, and is voiced by Tetsu Inada.
Panther is a flirt, and he considers himself a ladies man. His conceit is so great that those around him are embarrassed. This bothers Wolf and Leon a lot.
In Star Fox: Assault, he flirted with Krystal, but she either ignored or rejected it depending on where in the game it happens. His first attempt was outside the Sargasso Hideout, the second in Corneria, and the third inside the tunnel leading to the Aparoid Queen.
Panther is scheduled to appear again in Star Fox Command with the rest of Star Wolf, though it's not known yet what part he and his teammates will play in the game.
Pigma Dengar
Pigma Dengar is a fictional pig character from the Star Fox series.
Pigma is a greedy, unintelligent character described by fans as a character that players will love to hate.
He first appears as a villain in the never-released Star Fox 2 for the Super Nintendo, as one of the Star Wolf mercenaries sent by the evil Andross to attack the player throughout the course of the game.
He appears again in Star Fox 64, where—as part of a flashback—he is shown to have originally been an Arwing pilot working for the Star Fox team. Pigma was sent out on a mission together with James McCloud and Peppy Hare to investigate strange activity coming from the planet Venom, which served as the residence of the exiled professor Andross. Upon their arrival on Venom, Pigma committed treason against Corneria and betrayed the Star Fox team and went over to Andross's side. He later joined the villain counterpart of the Star Fox team—Star Wolf. When Star Wolf engages Star Fox, Pigma will attack Peppy if he is in the battle.
In , he attempts to control the Aparoids, but instead becomes consumed by them, rendering him braindead with his body attached to the boss of the Asteroid Belt, and subsequently killing him.
Pigma is exceptionally greedy and does not care who he hurts or kills so long as he ends up with a large paycheck in the end. His greed is what drove him to betray James McCloud and Peppy Hare, who likely considered him a friend until that point. This incredible greed disgusted Wolf O'Donnell, who in turn kicked Pigma off of the Star Wolf team. His greed eventually led to his aforementioned demise.
Pigma is the only character in the series to hold both Star Fox and Star Wolf membership, and one of the few characters who has died during the series.
Prince Tricky
Prince Tricky is a fictional character from the Star Fox universe. He is an EarthWalker (or a styracosaurus) and serves as Fox McCloud's companion in Star Fox Adventures. In this game, Tricky performs different tasks for Fox when fed GrubTubs (little blue mushroom-like food). He can open small caves and act as a flamethrower, among other abilities. Although he is a useful character, many fans find him annoying. He acts as the comic relief of the game.
Tricky's reason for accompanying Fox on his adventure is to save his imprisoned father, as his mother's health is too poor to undertake such a task.
Tricky's abilities in Star Fox Adventures
- Find secret: Tricky could uncover something by digging or something else with this ability.
- Stay: Tricky stays somewhere and doesn't follow Fox as usual.
- Call Tricky: Fox can summon Tricky if he has lost him, or previously ordered him to stay.
- Flame: Similar to a flamethrower. It can melt ice and set things on fire. If Fox hits Tricky too many times, Tricky will use this on him.
- Play: Fox can buy Tricky a ball in the shop in order to play fetch with him. Playing with Tricky causes him to change colours.
Other appearances
The character Tricky first appeared as an older, larger triceratops in Diddy Kong Racing, a game that came out several years before Star Fox Adventures. (Although it is debatable if this boss is the same character). Both games were developed by Rare. His official second appearance is in Star Fox: Assault. In that game, he has grown into a teenage/adult EarthWalker. During this brief appearance, Fox tells him to help Sauria recover from the Aparoid invasion. After Fox and Krystal save him, he says he will take care of Sauria so Fox and Krystal can come back on their honeymoon. (This causes Fox to become flustered and begin stuttering, but it doesn't seem to bother Krystal at all, who even giggles a bit.) Tricky's personality remains the same in Assault, much to the annoyance of fans. It appears that his sense of humour had not grown with his size.
ROB/NUS 64
ROB 64 is the robotic operator of the Great Fox mothership in the Star Fox series. In the Japanese version of the series, he is called NUS 064. "NUS" stands for "Nintendo Ultra Sixty-four," the original name of the Nintendo 64 system, and is part of the serial number of all N64 components: the controller, for example, is NUS-005.
ROB's name is a reference to the NES accessory R.O.B. The 64 is derived from the console of his first appearance, the Nintendo 64.
Although his full name is ROB 64, this is often shortened to just ROB. ROB has the ability to completely control the Great Fox, technically making the ship fully . It is also networked to the ship's main computers, allowing ROB to process any information requested by the Star Fox team. ROB can also use the ship's transfer device to send vehicles and items to Star Fox team members in the field.
ROB has changed in almost every installment.
- Star Fox 64: The player does not see much of ROB except his face. Because of the blocky shape of his head, it might have been inferred that he was somewhat bulky, although that does not appear to be the case.
- Star Fox Adventures: ROB looks somewhat disheveled and fallen into a state of slight disrepair, as does the rest of the Star Fox team. Due to a Supply Transfer Error, ROB scattered all of Fox's Arwing's fuel cells at the outset of the game, forcing Fox to search for them.
- Star Fox: Assault: Again, ROB's appearance mirrors the state of things for the Star Fox team. ROB looks upgraded and better-maintained, as does the Great Fox itself.
- Star Fox Command: ROB looks the same as he did in Assault, and rumors say he flies an Arwing.
ROB was nearly destroyed in Star Fox: Assault when Peppy Hare crashed the Great Fox into the shield protecting the entrance to the Aparoid Queen's lair, but Peppy and ROB managed to find an escape pod before the ship was destroyed.
SharpClaw
The SharpClaw are a fictional race of bipedal (two-legged) dinosaurs in the Star Fox: Adventures video game, led by General Scales and are one of the main antagonists of the game. They are highly militant in nature, commonly seen wearing various types of armor and carrying either a spiked club or a twin-bladed axe, some even carrying a shield. They also vary in color and size; most being roughly as tall as Fox McCloud while some are nearly twice his size and come in yellow, blue, green, and a pale grey-green variety. They are also the most anthropomorphic dinosaur species on Dinosaur Planet, the result of mutation due to strange energies in thier homeland of Moon Mountain Pass.
Despite constant efforts, they had failed time and again in thier efforts to seize power and rule Dinosaur Planet, being thwarted by the other tribes at every turn until Andross arrived and lent them his technological prowess in return for them aiding him in ressurecting his physical form. Despite carrying out his orders without question, it could be argued that the SharpClaw have at least some degree of animosity towards General Scales, as they are seen celebrating when he is overthrown at the end of Star Fox: Adventures.
In Star Fox: Assault, the SharpClaw suffered catastophic losses at the hands of the invading Aparoids, thier primitive technology being no match for the Aparoids' superior abilities.
Vixy Reinard
Vixy Reinard is a fictional character in the series. Her name is a pun on the words "vixen" and "reynard", both of which refer to foxes (though the term "vixen" is specific to females.) She is only in the early comics.Vixy is Fox McCloud's mother, and presumed to be the wife of James McCloud. She is only mentioned in the Nintendo Power Star Fox comic and because of this, some fans believe that she is not a bona fide part of the series, though the Star Fox 64 version of the story, which is considered the current canon, neither confirms nor nullifies her existence.
Andross had either previously dated or had desires to date Vixy prior to her meeting with James. After Vixy had fallen in love with James and had given birth to their son (Fox), Andross was driven into a jealous rage during which he planted a bomb on James's car. Unfortunately for James, Vixy, and Andross, it was Vixy who got in the car, detonating the bomb. She was killed in the blast.
Near the end of the comic story, one of Andross's two clones (Andross was killed earlier in the story) mistook Fara Phoenix for Vixy and admitted to her over a PA system from one of his flagships to killing Vixy. Fox McCloud hears this and then flies into a rage, destroying the flagship as well as the Dancing Insector.
