Formed from part of Grafton County. Named for: A Native American word meaning crooked, in reference to a bend in the Connecticut River.

Original New Hampshire county. Named for Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, a Prime Minister of Great Britain
011 Hillsborough County 1769 Nashua and Manchester
Original New Hampshire county. Named for Wills Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire, known in America as the Earl of Hillsborough.
013 Merrimack County 1823 Concord
Formed from parts of Hillsborough County and Rockingham County. Named for the Merrimack River.

Original New Hampshire county. Named for Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, a two-time Prime Minister of Great Britain. Exeter was the county seat until 1997.
017 Strafford County 1769 Dover
Original New Hampshire county. Named for William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford.
019 Sullivan County 1827 Newport.
Formed from part of Cheshire County. Named for John Sullivan, the third and fifth governor of New Hampshire
