Types of missiles:


Missile Design Series (Unified)

The particular letter triplet + number code system used in front of the missile name. The MDS includes missiles from all three military services: Army, Navy, and Air Force. [link]

First letter of triplet:

  • A = launch from air
  • B = capable of being launched from multiple environments
  • C = stored in "coffin" (horizontal container), raised to a vertical position and then fueled for launch
  • F = shoulder-launched missile weapon
  • G - Runway or ground
  • H - stored in missile silo, but launched from the surface
  • L = launch from missile silo
  • M = ground launched, mobile
  • P = launch from soft pad (fixed, unprotected surface location)
  • R = launch from surface ship
  • U = launch from submarine
Second letter of triplet:
  • G = surface attack
  • I = interception (air or space)
  • Q = target drone
  • U = underwater attack
Last letter of triplet:
  • M = missile
