Liquid Snake
Liquid Snake (commonly referred as Liquid) is Solid Snake's Doppelgänger and archnemesis, and also the field commander of FOXHOUND and the Genome Soldiers. He is over 183 cm tall, has an IQ of 180 and speaks seven languages (including Spanish, Arabic, French and Malay) fluently. He is an exact duplicate of Solid Snake in terms of appearance, with the only distinguishable features being his lighter hair colour, darker skin tone, and hairstyle. He also has a tattoo on his left arm, which resembles the Rod of Asclepius, but with a sword in its place.
Along with Snake and Solidus, he is one of the three "brothers" genetically engineered from cell samples taken from Big Boss in the Les Enfants Terribles project, and (wrongly, depending on how one completed MGS) believes himself to be inferior to Solid Snake, as the recipient of all of Big Boss's "flawed" recessive genes. In Metal Gear Solid epilogue, this inferiority complex is revealed to be incorrect: Revolver Ocelot reveals that Liquid is, in fact, the superior one. Furthermore, in Metal Gear Solid naked, Kojima reveals that neither Snakes are superior nor inferior, as the technology to modify phenotypes did not exist during the 1970s. As a result, he holds a strong resentment towards Solid Snake and wishes to defeat him in combat to reclaim his "birthright".
Liquid was raised in the UK shortly after birth and served the Special Air Service during the Gulf War in Iraq, where he was assigned to track down and destroy mobile Scud missiles. In truth, he infiltrated the Middle East as a sleeper agent for the British SIS, but was taken prisoner by Iraqi forces and held captive as POW until 1994, when he was rescued by the U.S. government. Liquid joined FOXHOUND in 2000 (after Snake and Campbell had already left the unit) and became field commander of the unit.
Metal Gear Solid
In Metal Gear Solid, Liquid leads FOXHOUND as they seize Shadow Moses Island and the Metal Gear REX, and take the DARPA Chief and ArmsTech President as hostages. He demands Big Boss' corpse in order to procure a cure for the genetic defects of the Genome Army and himself.During the course of Snake's mission, he is confronted by Liquid on several occasions. Initially, Liquid attacks Snake from a Hind D attack helicopter, but retreats when his helicopter is crippled by Snake's surface-to-air Stingers. He survives (his parachute is visible on a tree in the Snowfield of the base) and then tricks Snake into activating REX with Kenneth Baker's PAL card by posing as Master Miller (who was dead at the time of the incident) during radio calls.
The entire final act of the Shadow Moses Island incident is a series of battles between Snake and Liquid. First, Liquid pilots the Metal Gear REX and attacks Snake, but, with the help of Gray Fox (in the guise of the Cyborg Ninja), Snake destroys the Metal Gear. Then, Liquid and Snake battle bare-handed atop the ruins of the Metal Gear, attempting to fling each other from the top of the ruined Metal Gear to the ground far below. While it seems Snake is victorious in this struggle, Liquid, manning a machine-gun-armed military jeep, pursues him as he tries to escape from the self-destructing Shadow Moses facility. Ultimately, Liquid dies from the genetically-engineered FOXDIE virus, just outside the facility. His influence does not stop with his death, however.
Sons of Liberty
In Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Liquid takes control of former ally Revolver Ocelot, via an arm transplant conducted in Lyon, France. When Ocelot (controlled by Liquid) is on top the manned Metal Gear Ray standing on Arsenal Gear, he says "Why do you think I chose Ocelot as my host?" This would indicate that Liquid somehow arranged that his arm would be attached to Ocelot, and it not being Ocelot who chose the arm. Liquid's personality would often take over Ocelot's mind whenever Snake was in close proximity. It is theorized that Ocelot may have latent psychic abilities as a medium which he inherited from his father. However, events and conversations such as those with "GW" seem to argue against this idea and instead suggest the possibility of a digitized consciousness. After the sinking of the tanker, Snake and Otacon stole Liquid's body from the organization and used it to make people think that Snake died on the tanker, which carried Metal Gear RAY. Two years after, Liquid (while controlling Ocelot) leaked existence of Arsenal Gear to Otacon. Now his main goal is to "bury the Patriots for good". After he went for the location of the Patriots Ocelot knew about, he found his search to be fruitless as Ocelot had been given a false location of their wherabouts to begin with.

Naomi Hunter
}} Naomi Hunter is the head of FOXHOUND's medical staff, and part of the support crew assembled to assist Solid Snake during the Shadow Moses Island incident (the events of Metal Gear Solid) in 2005. During the course of the mission, she provides Snake with information about FOXHOUND members during battles. She has a doctoral degree in genetics and was employed by ATGC Inc. at California's Biotech Bay Area, where she worked on the company's gene therapy and gene strengthening experiments funded by the Department of Defense, resulting in the creation of the Genome Soldiers. She took over as FOXHOUND's chief genetist after the sudden death of her predecessor, Dr. Clark in 2003. She is over 165 cm tall. She is well-liked among her staff and is referred as "Dr. Naomi", instead of the more formal "Dr. Hunter".
However, much of Naomi's background and personal history is revealed to had been purchased or fabricated in order to acquire her position. Naomi was actually born in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during the Rhodesian Civil War sometime in the late 1970s. She appears to have been the daughter of Indian labourers who remained in Rhodesia after the British left. She was orphaned during the war and adopted by a young soldier named Frank Jaeger (future FOXHOUND member, Gray Fox), who found Naomi at the Zambezi River and took care of her as his little sister (although years later, Fox admitted to Snake that he was responsible for the deaths of Naomi's parents and that he adopted her out of personal guilt). Naomi and Frank lived together in Mozambique until Big Boss (Frank's benefactor) took them with him to the United States. Frank raised Naomi there and took her through school. However, Frank was forced to leave Naomi in the US, while he returned to FOXHOUND for duty. She did not hear about Fox until years later, when he was fatally wounded in combat by Solid Snake at Zanzibar Land.
Seeking to avenge her brother, Naomi bought her identity and changed her surname to "Hunter", after her brother's ("Hunter" being the English meaning of the Germanic name "Jaeger"). She studied genetics and joined FOXHOUND, believing that it would provide her with the perfect opportunity for revenge. While working on her gene therapy projects, Naomi completed the development of FOXDIE virus for the DOD that was initially overseen by Richard Ames. She also covered Dr. Clark's death at the hands of Gray Fox after he escaped and burned down his laboratory.
Metal Gear Solid
In Metal Gear Solid, during the Shadow Moses Island incident, Naomi serves as an advisor on medical issues to Solid Snake, giving him advice via the CODEC. While she initially befriends Snake, later, when faced with the accusations of treason (brought upon by Liquid Snake, while disguised as Master Miller), Naomi is forced to reveal the whole truth, including her relationship with Gray Fox, her motives, and the fact that prior to the mission she infected Snake with FOXDIE. She contends that it was not her decision to inject Snake with FOXDIE, but rather was part of Snake's operation all along.Prior to injection though, Naomi altered the FOXDIE program. Originally scheduled to kill Snake after completing his mission, instead she changed the incubation period to a wildcard value, sparing Snake at the end of his mission, but still leaving him vulnerable at any moment. Liquid, who is identical to Snake in the genetic level, is killed by the virus after coming in contact with him.
After the incident, Naomi is placed formally under arrest and charged with treason. However, three weeks after her arrest, she escapes custody while undergoing debriefing at an undisclosed facility, through actions Nastasha Romanenko (discloser of the information) believed Solid Snake alone capable of performing.See text In the Shadow of Shadow Moses in .
Guns of the Patriots
Naomi Hunter has made an appearance in the E3 2006 trailer of . In the trailer, Naomi makes an ominous foresight of Snake's health, informing him that he has only six months left to live.Vamp
Vamp is a member of Dead Cell (as such, he is one of the bosses of ). He has vampire-like attributes, including a taste for blood, the ability to run across or stand on the surface of water or vertical walls, superhuman speed and agility, and the ability to shrug off what would typically be a mortal wound (e.g. being shot in the head). (Other than the haematophagy, he doesn't seem to have any other traditional vampire weakness, however.) Besides the vampiric abilities, he is also an expert with both combat knives and throwing knives.
Originally from Romania, Vamp lost his entire family during a church bombing when he was a child and was forced to survive while being pierced on a crucifx for two days by feeding on the blood of his family, acquiring him his taste for blood. He is bisexual, and was the former lover of Marine Commandant Scott Dolph, Fortune's father. Because of this, he and Fortune have a very close friendship, being more loyal to each other than to any other member of the Sons of Liberty, even their own Dead Cell teammate Fatman.
Sons of Liberty
During the Big Shell incident (), Vamp rebels with the rest of Dead Cell, and leads many attacks alongside Fortune. He faces Raiden twice: first, in a close-in duel in an attempt to prevent Raiden and Emma Emmerich from disabling the GW AI, and second, when attempting to kidnap Emma as she attempts to go from one strut of the Big Shell to another by crossing the fence holding the oil spill inside the compound's boundaries. Both times Vamp is dispatched and apparently killed by Raiden, but not before Vamp inflicts Emma with a mortal wound. Vamp manages to survive, appearing briefly on the streets of New York City during the game's ending sequence. [Official Metal Gear Solid 2 Secrets page.]Guns of the Patriots
Vamp will return in as seen in a promotional flyer for the game released during E3 2005. In Metal Gear Saga Vol. 1, Hideo Kojima confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will explain how Vamp managed to survive the events of Metal Gear Solid 2.AC!D
Vamp is a card in Metal Gear AC!D and Metal Gear AC!D 2, and when equipped, will give the player back health for 1/2 of the damage inflicted on enemies. When this card is activated, a short cinematic sequence plays, which is his intro movie for MGS2.
In AC!D 2, Vamp's card is still present, but he also appears as a boss in the Arena mode.
Mei Ling
Mei Ling is the data analyst in charge of saving Solid Snake's (and by extension, the player's) mission data during the Shadow Moses island operation (the events of Metal Gear Solid). She is the one who invented Snake's wireless communication equipment, the Codec, as well the Soliton Radar, which detects the patrol routes of nearby enemy soldiers. Everytime Snake saves his data, Mei Ling provides him with advice through Chinese proverbs (as well quotations from Western authors).Mei Ling was born in the United States to a Chinese couple from Kwantung and was raised in a Chinatown in San Francisco. She attended MIT, where she majored in air intelligence and aerial photography and participated in their ROTC program. Mei Ling originally wanted to be a jet pilot, but due to her poor eyesight (she wears contact lenses), she failed her aptitude test. Instead, she continued her research in developing a new radar system and was scouted by the military for her expertise. She worked with technicians in the NRO in Fort Meade and ENPIC in the fields of electronic and signal intelligence using spy satellites.
Metal Gear Solid
During the Shadow Moses island incident, she helps identify Master Miller's true identity as Liquid Snake by noticing that Miller's signal came from inside the base at Shadow Moses Island. After Liquid Snake finally dies, she examines satellite photographs to locate a nearby snowmobile for Snake and his companion (who will change depending on actions taken at a certain point in the game) to exit with. She also makes a hard copy of all the data to counteract an ensuing conspiracy. In , the Nintendo GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid, Mei Ling performs all of the same functions she did in the original, but she noticeably loses her Chinese accent and speaks in a standard American manner.
In , she is one subject (as is Naomi Hunter) in the "Photoshoot Mode".
Other appearances
In , Mei Ling becomes part of Philanthropy, an anti-Metal Gear organization. She assists Snake and Otacon from behind-the-scenes, attempting to steal equipment from the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center. If the player saves their game 13 times during the Tanker Chapter, Mei Ling will make a (voice-over only) cameo in which she corrects Otacon on one of his proverbs.Mei Ling will return in as confirmed on the Hidechan radio show.
She also appears in the non-canonical Game Boy Color game, '. In ', Mei Ling appears (in a fashion) in the Snake Tale "External Gazer", where she seems to be quite aggressive in personality, and reads tabloids.
Mei Ling is also a focal character in the Japan-only Metal Gear Solid Drama CD series, where she infiltrates the Neo-Communist nation of San Chago with Snake in order to procure evidence of Chemical Weapons production in second scenario and goes along with Snake and Meryl to rescue Campbell in the third.
Master Miller
Master Miller (real name McDonnel Benedict Miller) is a survival instructor, formerly with FOXHOUND, said to be responsible for teaching Solid Snake and teaching some of his skills and techniques.
| Master Miller, circa 1999 | |
Master Miller was born in the United States 60 years after his grandparents emigrated there from Japan (he is half-Japanese). He served as a survival master in SAS (Special Air Service, a special operations group, of Britain), The Green Beret Squad, US Marine boot camp, and most recently also FOXHOUND. He is also volunteered as a coach in MERC SCHOOL (Mercenary School) twice a year but since retired. When he served as a drill sergeant in the FOXHOUND, he was referred to as a "Hell Master" and draftees called him "Master Miller" with the utmost respect.
Snake probably met him while in FOXHOUND's boot camp. He divorced his first wife (Nadine), and resided in Los Angeles with his daughter (Catherine) while serving as an advisor for FOXHOUND during Roy Campbell's days in the unit (including the , where he gave instructions and advice to Solid Snake through his radio). After the Uprising of Zanzibar and Colonel Campbell's retirement, Miller retired as well and moved to Alaska. He sometimes trained the Alaskan scouts during his free time.
However, about three days prior to the terrorist takeover of Shadow Moses, Master was attacked and murdered in his home. Liquid Snake, the terrorist leader, then assumed Master's identity and posed as him during Snake's mission on Shadow Moses Island.
Johnny Sasaki
}} Johnny Sasaki is a recurring joke character, first appearing in Metal Gear Solid, but returns in ', is referenced in ' and appears as a card in Metal Gear Ac!d and Metal Gear Ac!d 2. He serves as a comic relief, as he is a coward and diarrhetic who ends up in embarrassing situations. He was named after Hideki Sasaki, the character model designer of the Metal Gear Solid series, who had a habit of purposely disorganizing his desk to make himself look busy according to interviews with the development team.During the Shadow Moses Island incident (the events of the original Metal Gear Solid), Johnny was one of the Genome Soldiers that took part of Liquid Snake's uprising. He's the guard assigned to watch Donald Anderson's cell when Snake first infiltrates the facility. When he hears Anderson (actually Decoy Octopus) dying of a heart attack (FOXDIE), he opens Meryl Silverburgh's cell by mistake and is knocked out and stripped by her, using his outfit as a disguise afterwards. Later, he guarded Solid Snake's cell in the medical room after being captured by Sniper Wolf. The player can trick him into releasing Snake using one of two methods while he's in the bathroom (by hiding Snake under the bed or using the ketchup bottle given by Otacon to create a fake pool of blood for Snake to lie over) or wait for Otacon to unlock the door.
He managed to escape authorities and joined the Gurlukovich mercenaries. During the Big Shell incident (the events of Metal Gear Solid 2), he was spotted in a bathroom stall (in the Conference Room inside Shell 1 Core), commenting about the Gurlukovich Mercenaries being a "decent bunch" and complaining about how much the Presidential Security team gets on his nerves. He also points out that his commanding officer, Olga, looks like Meryl. Later, he ran into Emma Emmerich while she was crossing the Strut L Oil Fence. Although he was assigned to watch out for intruders, he let Emma get away due to his experience with Meryl on Shadow Moses. Both of these conversations can be heard by the player using the Directional Microphone.
In Metal Gear Ac!d, Johnny Sasaki appears as a card from the "MGS1" pack, notably the card's ability is called Diarrhea, referencing the diarrhetic experience he had during the Shadow Moses incident. When activated, the card also shows a short clip of Johnny in his underpants (from the Japanese version) on the ground after Meryl strips him. For the second Ac!d, the Johnny Sasaki card allows the player to discard their hand and draw new cards, and shows the same video of Johnny in his near nudity. An upgrade of the existing card will open a new video showing Johnny sprinting to the bathroom in pain.
Johnny Sasaki's grandfather makes an appearance in . See Johnny for more info.
Hideo Kojima has confirmed in his blog [link] that Johnny Sasaki will return for .
