The wilderness is found in the southern part of the Chocolate Mountains, in the southeastern part of California. It is also called the "Little Picacho Peak Wilderness".

At elevations ranging from 200 to 1,500 feet (60 to 500 m), the wilderness is home to the Picacho wild horse, which roams the northwestern 5,000 acre (20 km²) part of the wilderness, wild burros, as well as desert tortoises and spotted bats. A herd of desert bighorn sheep are also in the area.
