The Liverpool-Parramatta Transitway (or T-Way) is a bus rapid transit route in Western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, running between Liverpool railway station and Parramatta railway station.

History

The Transitway was conceived as part of the New South Wales State Government initiative called Action for Transport 2010, which conceived a timetable of new infrastructure projects, including new roads and rail links. The project had a special focus on Western Sydney, due to the rapid growth in population and commercial activity. This demanded new and improved public transport infrastructure.

Included as part of this plan was a network of 90km of rapid bus transitways, which would link major centres in Western Sydney through suburbs where there was little or no public transport. These would stretch from Penrith in Sydney's west to Strathfield in the Inner Western suburbs.

Construction began in 1999, and involved 20 km of bus-only roads, and 10 km of new bus-only lanes on existing roads. Some 35 stations were planned, including six key stations, and two major bus interchanges at Prairiewood and Bonnyrigg stations. The T-way was completed in early 2003 and services commenced in February of that year.

Facilities

Stations on the T-way were architecturally designed. They feature real-time information displays, showing the actual arrival times of the next bus, including their route numbers, destinations and connecting services. The roads on the T-way feature special technology, allowing buses the right of way over various intersections, to avoid them having to stop at traffic lights. Video cameras and "Help Points" are available for customers' security.

A cycleway, completed in early 2006, runs along the transitway for some of its length.

Route

The T-way runs through the central business district of Parramatta, before heading onto the Great Western Highway to South Wentworthville, after which it heads onto its own alignment next to the Sydney Water pipeline that runs from Prospect Reservoir. It then proceeds on its own alignment in an old freeway reservation through to Hoxton Park. At Brickmakers' Creek in Liverpool it heads onto its own alignment to access the main centre of Liverpool and the railway station bus interchange.

Service Information

The trunk buses that serve the whole route are run by Western Sydney Buses, a subsidiary of the State Government-owned Sydney Buses. The route on the T-way is known as T80 in timetables.

Services Frequency:
Peak Hours Every 10 minutes
Daytime Off-Peak Every 15-30 minutes
Late Night Every 60 minutes

Some feeder and local buses also use the T-way as part of their bus route.
